JUNE 2006

A Message from the TYC Board of Directors
Welcome to the Tiverton Yacht Club’s summer season of 2006! We are looking forward to an exciting summer of sailing, swimming, and social activities. The Board of Directors and the committee chairs have been busy getting the club ready for the upcoming season. The pool is ready for swim lessons; we again have a full schedule of races; and we will once again be training some of the best young sailors on the bay. A full social schedule is anticipated, including the Thursday night pot-luck dinners. These Thursday evening events are a great time to renew old friendships and make new ones.
As a result of our tragic fire, we will again be using the tent for our temporary clubhouse. The Commodore and the Board of Directors have been working tirelessly to finalize plans for the new clubhouse. We have complete building plans and we’re in the final stages of the permitting process. We look forward to starting construction as soon as the club ends its summer activities.

We urge all the members to support the club in these challenging times. We have a strong membership and you will notice many new members in this logbook. If you are a new member, welcome aboard! We hope you will take advantage of the many activities the club offers. If you are an existing member, please seek out our new members to personally welcome them to the club.

Be sure to visit the club Web site frequently at www.tivertonyachtclub.org. Listings of activities and up-to-date club information are available at this site. Another great method of communication between the club and its members is e-mail. By using e-mail the club can get the word out quickly at a much lower cost. If you haven’t already done so, please let our club membership chair, Lew Mutty(lewmutty@earthlink.net), know your e-mail address.

We hope you all have a wonderful summer at the TYC.

Swim Program
The swim program will begin this year on July 5 and run for eight weeks. We welcome back last year’s instructors, Wendy Turcotte and Amy Teixeira. Fees this year will be $80 for members and $100 for non-members. Each class section meets twice weekly, Tuesday-Thursday or Wednesday-Friday, and classes run approximately 45 minutes. Classes start at 8 am and end at noon (see swim schedule 2006. Red Cross certificates will be awarded upon successful completion of a course. The program is again run under Red Cross guidelines. Please note that course titles have been updated and changed slightly. For your convenience you can view these changes on our Web site. You can also download an application from the Web site or e-mail me @ kkiley2@juno.com. I look forward to seeing you all at the pool!

House & Grounds News
The 20 ft. by 40 ft. tent (same as last season) will be erected in mid-June and remain on site through Labor Day. We have again decided not to hire a steward in order to save money for the rebuilding process. But absent a steward, we need your help and cooperation to keep the grounds neat and litter free. Please put your trash directly into the dumpster to prevent trash barrel overflow. Thank you for your cooperation.

Help Launch a Membership Drive (and Get a Break on Dues!)
The TYC Board now anticipates that construction on the new clubhouse will begin soon after Labor Day. New members – and new dues revenue – will ease the burden of financing construction and speed completion of a first-class facility for the 2007 season.

You can help recruit new members this summer by printing off application forms from the TYC Web site and filling in the “members you know” section. Pass these applications along to friends and neighbors who may have an interest in our programs and activities. When the TYC Board approves a new member from your recruitment efforts, your $100 work assessment fee will be waived.
Benefits of membership include sail training and swim lessons for the kids; use of the pool, beach, and marina; casual social events; transient dock space for wash down of boats as well as loading and unloading; wet and dry dinghy storage; weekly big boat and dinghy racing; reciprocal yacht club benefits; annual cruising activities; and when available, moorings and slips at reduced rates. Members will also enjoy year-round social events in the new clubhouse and be able to rent attractive function rooms at special discounted rates.

Now is the time to join the TYC before the membership cap (200 families) is imposed. Initiation fees for new members will go up and be enforced once construction starts. New construction will bring a surge of membership applications because other clubs in the region are at maximum capacity with long waiting lists. Help your friends and neighbors get in on the ground floor!

Race Report
The racing season has started. The first race on May 17 was cancelled due to high winds. The next Wednesday, May 24, made up for the poor start.
It was a beautiful evening and the first three boats in Class A finished within one minute of each other on corrected time. It’s going to be a competitive summer!
If you want to join in and need information, call Lanny Goff at (401) 263-8282.

Junior Activities
Beginning on June 29 there will be a junior pool party every Thursday evening during the summer season. The party will feature swimming races, big and little splash competitions, the favorite penny dive, and the pool basketball contests. Prizes will be awarded to all who win any of these fun contests.
After the pool events activities move to the lawn where two golf-putting ranges will be set up. These golf games usually see competition between the youngsters and their parents as well!
Other youth activities are planned, but we need adult volunteers to assist. If you would like to help with any of the following events, please contact me by phone at (508) 675-0800 or by e-mail, jimdee@worldnet.att.net today.
The following events need additional volunteers:
1. afternoon pool party for the very young - ages 2-5
2. teenage dance under the tent in late July and late August
3. art show - display children’s art work under the tent for a Thursday evening party
4. musical review under the tent on a Thursday night - Dee and I are seeking five youngster/adults who would like to present a one-hour show.
5. a summer birthday party for all youngsters
6. your idea for a summer event for the youngsters
I thank you for your participation in last year’s events and Dee and I look forward to seeing you on Thursday evening as well as hearing from you concerning being a volunteer for a Junior Activities program.

Garden Update
Dee and I planted 92 annuals in the garden. These will complement the many fine perennial plants that Mimi Mutty donated to the garden last year.
If any club member has a plant that they would like to donate to this year’s garden, please let me know. Dee and I can meet you there some evening and select the right spot in the garden where your plant can add sparkle.
