Commodore’s Report

Dear Fellow Members,

It’s cold outside and I’m sure many of you have not been thinking of TYC and all that goes with it. However, Punxsutawney Phil did not see his shadow on February 2, so that means spring is right around the corner.

We are all working to prepare for the 2007 season. The committees have planned a number of work parties so we’re ready when the weather turns warm. The TYC depends on our members to help maintain the club, and participation by the membership helps to improve the club while keeping our costs and dues down. So, I hope to see many of you at our upcoming spring work parties. Sail Training, Marina, Pool, and House and Grounds could all use a few extra hands getting ready for the 2007 summer season.

Our rebuilding process is moving along quite well. As most of you know, our permits for both the bathroom trailer and the clubhouse itself were appealed. Our new council, Ken Tremblay, is optimistic that the permits will be approved by the Zoning Board of Appeals. The vote for the bathroom trailer is scheduled for March 7 and the public hearing for the clubhouse is scheduled for April 4. I hope many of you will attend the clubhouse public hearing in support of our club. It has taken us a long time to reach this point, and we’re thankful for all your support during these frustrating times.

Once we get through this appeal process it will be time to rebuild, and that time could be soon. So I hope everyone plans to attend the fund-raiser at Sakonnet Fish Company, on Sunday, April 27. Jim Rogers is planning this event to help raise money for our building fund.

We will continue to keep you updated on our rebuilding process. I look forward to seeing everyone soon, if not at one of our scheduled social events, then definitely on the water.

TYC Sail Training

March 2007

To all TYC members, the 2007 year seems to be off to a fast start with many positive changes coming to TYC.

As you all have heard, the yacht club has received a building permit from the Town of Tiverton. This has put the Board and building crew into high gear.

Our Sail Training program is also moving forward. The Board has approved the purchase of four new Optis for our fleet this summer. Also, there will be another new set of 420 sails. These will be great additions to the fleet as we continue to update our equipment.

Some other important changes are coming to the program this summer:

1. Class schedule changes

• Racing and Inter. II will now be on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday.

• Beginners and Inter. I will be on Wednesday and Friday.

• These changes allow for better scheduling for team racing and regattas.

2. Registration

• Please go to the TYC Web site to review the program.

• All registration forms are available online (tivertonyachtclub.org) under the Sail Training section, application form. Download the form and mail it in.

• NOTE: A deposit is due by March 15, 2007.

• A mandatory parents’ orientation meeting will be held on Thursday, June 14.

• Registrations forms will not be mailed this year!!!! (Web only.)

• If you have any difficulty, please contact Melinda McAuliffe or Rick Lyman.

3. Opening breakfast will be held Sunday, June 3.

• Please stay tuned for more news on this event. Last year’s breakfast was a great success. It renewed friendships and provided an important fund-raising opportunity for our Sail Training program.

I would also like to thank the members of the Sail Training Committee for all their help with keeping this program so strong. But, we can always use more hands. Please keep an eye out for the work parties that will come this spring. We need skilled people to help with boat repair and maintenance.

We look forward to having many new sailors in the Beginners and Intermediate I fleet this year. If your children are 8 or older, they can have a wonderful summer of sailing at TYC. So, come down the hill from the pool and join our kids on the water.

Looking forward to fair winds and a warm summer,

Rick Lyman, Sail Training

Social Committee

Thursday night pot luck dinner plans are well under way! We are looking forward to a summer filled with delicious food and lots of fun. In addition, we are considering plans for a dock party and possibly a wine and beer tasting. If you have any ideas or suggestions, you can contact me at buckley3@cox.net.

Pool opening, commissioning, and a pizza challenge will kick off the season on Friday, June 22. See you there!! Lori Boivin

Pool Report

It’s hard to think about summer when the ski rack is still on the roof of the car, but it will be here before you know it! The TYC pool will operate in much the same way as it did last summer. We will be open for general swim from noon to 6 pm all week with extended hours to 8 pm on Thursdays for our pot luck dinner night. We plan to open the pool on Friday, June 22, at noon and keep it open until 8 pm that night to celebrate the beginning of summer. We keep the pool heated all summer to make swimming more enjoyable. Come on by and enjoy a swim! Wayne

Membership

Members,

We have maintained a strong membership in the face of adversity thanks to your commitment and loyalty. It is proof that a yacht club is not just a building, but the people within it that make it a club. Currently we have 140 memberships with a capacity for 200 memberships.

Please help us reach our membership goals by referring a friend or neighbor to join the TYC this season. As soon as reconstruction begins the $200 initiation fee will increase. So this is your final opportunity to get your friends to join before we go out to the general public later this year and likely raise the initiation fee.

Once construction starts we will be organizing a membership drive. We would anticipate filling our membership and starting a waiting list once construction of the new house begins. Anyone interested in helping with the Membership Committee should please contact Lew Mutty at lewmutty@earthlink.net.

Silent Auction

A silent auction and cocktail party will be held on Friday, April 27, at the Sakonnet Fish Company in Portsmouth. The social event of the spring season will take place from 7 pm to 10 pm. Ticket price of $5 includes a selection of food and a cash bar.

Jim Rogers, coordinator, has announced that Ernie Feld is the honorary chair of this event. Due to Ernie’s hard work in the solicitation of gifts, the last auction raised over $3,500 for the club’s building fund.

Items for the auction are needed. They can be gifts of clothing, artwork, jewelry, or boat-related items. Boaters can offer an afternoon or evening sail as a donated gift. The complete list of silent auction items will be available to the guests at the auction and also on the TYC Web site.

Rogers announced the following members of his committee: Pauline Rogers, Lori Boivin, Phyllis Ibbotson, Amy Cooper, Molly Sherden and Eric Baker, who will handle the public relations for the auction.

Many gifts have already been received. They include a weekend at a Beacon Hill townhouse given by Bill and Molly Sherden, a catered dinner by a personal chef, and a summer gift basket donated by Maryanne Langley.

If you wish to donate an item for the auction, please contact Rogers at jimdee@worldnet.att.net or at 508 675-0800. Your donation will be appreciated as would your presence at this April 27 event.

Jim Rogers,

Dredging Update:

The Marina Committee has the dredge application proposal in hand and will review it with the Board at the next meeting. The dredge window for 2007 opens in November and that is when we will do the work. The full cost of the project will not be known until the engineer does the pre-dredge survey set for May or June. At that time the quantity of material will be determined. Once under contract the dredge company digs off a barge, loads the material onto the barge, and moves it out all at one time. There will be no piling of material on the beach. The estimated cost prior to survey is around $20,000.
