Spring 2010
COMMODORE’S REPORT
It is time to start thinking about the coming year at the TYC. A groundhog may have predicted six more weeks of winter, but spring will be here sooner than you think. The Board of Directors has been working hard all winter to organize this year’s operation and activities. We will be erecting the tent once again this year, hopefully for the last time. The marina will be open for full operation – slips and moorings. If you are interested in a slip or mooring, contact Mike Hiener, the Marina Chairman, to get on the waiting list. If you plan to sign up for sail training or swimming lessons, I also encourage you to do so early. This helps us to plan the season more effectively.
I am sure everyone wants to know what is happening with the clubhouse rebuilding effort. As I have previously reported, we are moving forward on several fronts. Our appeal for both the marina and clubhouse ruling is presently before the Rhode Island Supreme Court. We are hopeful that they will hear the appeal soon. Our zoning amendment was recently endorsed by the Tiverton Planning Board as both satisfying the Comprehensive Community Plan and being consistent with zoning. We had hoped to make our initial appearance before the town council at the end of January but have been delayed as two council members seek the opinion of the RI Ethics Commission to avoid a possible conflict. We now anticipate that we will have our public hearing in April, at which point the council will hopefully approve our amendment. For this to be successful we need you, our members, your friends and neighbors, and everyone in the community who supports the TYC to come to the public meeting and let the council know how you feel! I can’t stress enough how important it is to come to this meeting! The officers and Board of Directors will be notifying members of the meeting date as it becomes available. Please make the time and effort to attend!
MARINA REPORT
Summer is just around the corner and the majority of people will be returning to their slips and moorings. There are a few people we have not heard from yet, and I will be contacting those individuals to see what their plans are for this season. If we have any open moorings or slips, I will notify the people on the waiting list to fill up the marina. If you are not on the waiting list, let me know and I will add your name.
We are all looking forward to a wonderful season of sun, fun cruising, and racing. I will be opening the gates in mid April, and a work party will be scheduled shortly thereafter to repair the docks.
Enjoy the remainder of the winter, and I’m looking forward to seeing everyone in the spring.
Mike

JUNIOR ACTIVITIES
Plans are now being made for another exciting summer for the junior members. The Thursday evening pool parties provide swim races and pool games, as well as the popular golfing contests. Dee and I welcome all adults who wish to assist us by judging these contests or distributing the great prizes that are awarded to the winners.
During the summer we would like to have as many junior events as possible. If you wish to sponsor an event, we would be very pleased and would work with you on the project. Additional events, including a luau during the day and a teen pool party on a Friday night, will be posted on the TYC website.
Phyllis Ibbotson will chair an art show, a sculpture event, and a talent show. These artistic events will take place during the Thursday night socials.
Dee and I look forward to hearing from you and seeing you at the club.

SOCIAL COMMITTEE REPORT
Impromptu ice skating parties have taken the edge off the cold winter days. Members have been spotted skating on Nonquit Pond and Penny Pond on sunny weekends. These members really love the water!
I am working on the summer calendar for potluck Thursdays! Look for some new themes to pop up and start perfecting those recipes for some great food!
As always, suggestions are welcome. If you are interested in hosting a Thursday potluck dinner, please contact me. This is an easy way to be involved and a fun way to express your creativity!
Think warm thoughts.
Best,
Lori Boivin

HOUSE COMMITTEE REPORT
Hopefully the 2010 season will be the last season under the tent. Our legal and regulatory strategy to facilitate the rebuilding process is proceeding on several fronts simultaneously, and we are encouraged that breaking ground on a new clubhouse this fall is a very real possibility. Any significant construction activity must be delayed until after Labor Day for safety reasons. Once again, we plan to operate the club without a steward in order to conserve funds for the re-building budget, so your help keeping the grounds litter-free and attractive is appreciated. In April, we will be announcing the date for a volunteer work party on a Saturday morning in late spring to get the grounds ready for the new season.
SAIL TRAINING REPORT
The Tiverton Yacht Club Sail Training Committee is currently interviewing candidates to serve as sailing instructors for the 2010 summer season. Lead instructor, instructor, and junior instructor positions are open. US Sail Level 1 instructors are encouraged to apply. Potential new hires, along with past instructors, will go through the interview process.
Planning has also begun for Sail Training’s Opening Breakfast fund-raiser, to be held on May 16 at St. Christopher Church. Baskets or items for a basket, along with silent auction items, are being requested from local businesses as well as interested club members.
The board has approved the purchase of a new Open Bic. This will add some variety to our sailing program. We are attempting to get one on loan before purchasing to try it out.
Registration forms are available online (tivertonyachtclub.org) under the Sail Training section, Application Form page. Download the form and mail it in.
Discounts are given for early registration. Early registration helps us not only hire the appropriate number and types of instructors but helps us in determining class size and equipment assignments.
C420 NBYA Junior Race Week will be held at Fort Getty in Jamestown, RI, on August 13-15 (Friday to Sunday). This year’s regatta is hosted by Conanicut Yacht Club. Registration will be from 12:00 to 5:00 pm on Thursday, August 12.
Adult sailing will be offered again this year. Instruction will be held on Wednesday evenings throughout the summer. This is a pay-as-you-attend program. Sign-up sheets and more information will be available at the TYC Opening Breakfast.
Welcome aboard to new committee members Nancy Adams, Kristen Dalbec, and James Hilton. Welcome back to the committee, Jim. We look forward to working with you all.
If your children are 8 years old or older, they can have a wonderful summer of sailing at TYC in our beginner program. Multiple child discounts are given to families. Come join the other kids on the water and shore. Memories and friendships that last a lifetime are made on the Sakonnet!
Thanks again to all who take part in the Tiverton Yacht Club Sail Training Program. We are looking forward to another great summer season.
Best regards,
Chip Reuther, Co-Chair
Phyllis Ibbotson, Co-Chair

POOL REPORT
The plan for next summer is to continue pool operations much as we have for the past season. The extended hours seem to be well received and will continue. Children can be enrolled for swimming lessons at the May 16 Sail Training Opening Breakfast at St Christopher Church. Let’s keep our fingers crossed for a little less rain this summer!
