SUMMER 2010

COMMODORE’S MESSAGE

Summer is here at last! I hope all TYC members take the opportunity to enjoy it while it lasts. For many this includes taking the kids to sail training or swim lessons or an afternoon at the pool. For others it is the Thursday night potluck dinners or marina activities. If you have been participating in one of these activities, I encourage you to try another. You may meet a completely different group of members and enjoy yourself! Although there are a number of organized activities at the club, you may also stop by on your own just to enjoy one of our beautiful sunsets and a to-go pizza on our picnic tables! The gas grills are also available for your use. Since the loss of our clubhouse we don’t have stewards on duty so we ask that you place all trash in the dumpster (not trash cans) when you leave and be sure the grills and gas are turned off. We have a beautiful location – take advantage of it!

Our rebuilding effort continues to move along, although slowly. All briefs are in at the Supreme Court and we await our hearing. The timing is not predictable but we hope it is soon. Our zoning amendment request is being delayed as we wait for an Ethics Commission opinion regarding two council members who may have a relationship to the TYC. Once that is resolved, a public hearing will be scheduled where we need the support of all TYC members and friends.

MEMBERSHIP REPORT

I am happy to report that we have several new members since our last publication. Please welcome Rick and Jenn Hodges; Scott and Jacky McClean; Ned, Terry, Christopher, Michael, and Zadoc Jastram; Chris, Karen, Lauren, and Allison Benevides; Hale, Nellie, and Wendy Walcoff; Pat, Allicyn, Sean, Mathew Hackett; and John and Barbara Mills, and Tony Escobar. I hope to see all of them at our various functions this summer.

I am also saddened to report that longtime member John Majikut lost his battle with leukemia in March. He will be missed by all and our thoughts go out to his family. This year’s TYC sponsored blood drive will be dedicated in John’s memory. Please watch for more information on this event in July.

As always, membership information can be found on the website. Please share this with any friends and family who might be interested. Logbooks will be printed in late May or early June. Please let me know if you have any updates or corrections to your listing, and please let me know if you have any news that we can share in the next newsletter.

Happy spring!

MARINA REPORT

Today is May 1, 2001, and the Marina Committee assembled to begin working on the docks and beach. Welcome to all of the new faces among the eighteen people who volunteered to help.

The first group was busy raking the beach to make it presentable for the summer season. A second party removed and replaced some rotted planks on the main dock and finger piers, and a third party worked on putting back the ramp to the north dock. The ramp came loose one windy day in November and was hauled up onto the land. When the dock was pulled onto the land there was minor damage to one of the railings. The railing was fixed, and new bolts were installed on the other rails.

We were also going to power wash the decking, but the water was not working. Some of the people scrubbed the decks with salt water to remove the shells, bird droppings, and dirt. Investigation of the water problem will take place next week.

The marina and beach are now open for everyone’s enjoyment.

JUNIOR SUMMER ACTIVITIES

The focal point of all junior activities is the Family Night on Thursday when members gather to share their bread and enjoy the company of their fellow members.

The junior pool games challenge the young to participate in various races as well as games such as pool basketball and diving contests. A very popular game is the penny dive where youngsters pick up the hundred pennies strewn on the bottom of the pool. Dee and I enlist other adults to assist in the judging of these games.

After the pool games Dee sets up two golfing mats on the lawn that attract both young and old to sharpen their miniature golfing skills. We can always tell the youngsters who go with their parents to play golf on a big course!

Various other junior programs are held on these Thursdays. Phyllis Ibbotson does many artistic nights where youngsters paint items, sculpture small objects, or perform their talents at a musical review.

Dee and I invite all members to join with us and Phyllis at these weekly events. If any of you wish to bring a new junior event to our program, please let us know and we will be happy to assist you.

We look forward to seeing you there - Thursday night at 6:30!!

GARDEN

For the past four months, beginning on a warm Saturday in March, we have been working on the garden. A special thanks to Mimi Mutty and Polly Ney for donating plants to the garden. A garden is never finished. It is always a work in progress.

Dee and I welcome any donation of plants from your garden. If you would like to give us a piece of one of your perennials, please contact us at jimdee@att.net or visit us at the garden where we hope to be there every evening of the summer.

SAIL TRAINING

The TYC sailboat racing season will start Wednesday night, May 12. As in the past few years our club and the Spar Island Racing Association (SIRA) will combine their fleets for races every Wednesday night with race starts at 6:30 pm in Mount Hope Bay. There are three classes of racers, depending upon the performance

handicap rating of the yachts.

Boats may elect to race with or without spinnakers (with appropriate rating adjustments), so beginning sailors or those with shorthanded crews may still participate. Post-race parties with hamburgers, hot dogs, and beverages are held after each race, once the club is opened.

On Wednesday night, August 4, and Sunday, August 29, we’ll participate in the Mount Hope Sailing Association (MOHOSA) regatta in which other sailors, principally from Bristol Yacht Club, will race.

Contact Lanny Goff at LannyGoff@aol.com for further information, notice of race, and racing instructions.

The more the merrier!!

SAIL TRAINING REPORT

Preparations are under way for the 2010 summer season and registrations have been sailing in! Sail training will begin Monday, June 28, and end on Friday, August 20, with Awards Night being held that evening.

A mandatory parents’ meeting is scheduled for Thursday, June 17, at 6:30 under the tent. The balance of class fees is due at that time. Please make sure to attend this important meeting. It helps the Sail Training Committee if everyone attends, and all our "housekeeping" is tended to.

The head sailing instructor for the 2010 season is Krista Siino. Krista taught at TYC in 2002 and will be returning with additional teaching and racing experience. Katie Hilton and Dylan Rodriguez will also be returning this year and will be reporting to Krista as assistant instructors. Based on enrollment numbers, additional instructors may need to be hired. All of our instructors are U.S. Sailing Level 1 certified, as well as certified in CPR and First Aid.

The early registration discount period has passed, but applications are still being accepted. To download an application, go to http://www.tivertonyachtclub.org/S_application.htm. Since the last newsletter we have changed our focus from the Open Bic to the Vanguard Bug. We recently purchased five one-season-old Bugs to add to our sail training fleet. The Bugs will be used by the beginning and intermediate students. They will not be used for racing.

C420 NBYA Junior Race Week will be held at Fort Getty in Jamestown, RI, on August 13-15 (Friday to Sunday). This year’s regatta is hosted by Conanicut Yacht Club. Registration will be from 12:00 to 5:00 pm on Thursday, August 12.

If your children are 8 years old or older, have them join the rest of the kids for another great season sailing on the Sakonnet. Thanks again to all who take part in the Tiverton Yacht Club Sail Training Program.

POOL REPORT

We are planning on opening the pool for the season on Friday,

June 25. Pool operation will be the same as last year. Hours and swim lesson information is available on our Web page. We are looking for a volunteer who can help us maintain the pool by taking water samples to a pool supply company for testing once a week or so and picking up chemicals. If you think you can help, please contact me at wkarzenski@cox.net
