MAY 2007

Summer is almost here! Plans are well underway for the 2007 sail training season. The “early” registration deadline was March 30, and we have a number of new students this year! Our “Beginner” class is nearly full- so don’t delay any longer if you have been thinking about signing up a new beginner. Remember- there is a MANDATORY Parent Orientation meeting on Thurs. June 14 at 7:00 p.m. “under the tent”. The balances of all class fees are due at this time.

We are pleased to announce the Head Instructor for this year- Gardiner Bowen from Roger Williams University. Gardiner comes to us with a lot of racing experience as well as having been with the program on Martha’s Vineyard for several years. We would also like to welcome Katie Hilton as our newest instructor. Rick Lyman and Bronwen McAuliffe will be our returning instructors this year.

Save the Date!! June 3 rd will be our second annual Opening Breakfast! This was a very successful fundraiser for us last year, and we hope to have an even better turn out this year! The sail training committee is asking for donations of gift baskets (any theme, any type, large or small!) for our raffle. Please call Kelly Marks (625-1358).

The breakfast will be held at St. Christopher’s Church following morning mass from 10:30-12:30.

There is still a bit of work to do to be ready for the season. We have a work day scheduled for Sat. May 5. Any and all help is appreciated to help get our fleet in order and ready for our sailors. Hope to see you there!

Thank you!

The Sail Training Committee

FEB 2007

To all TYC members, the 2007 year seems to be off to a fast start with many positive changes coming to TYC.

As you all have heard, the yacht club has received a building permit from the Town of Tiverton. This has put the board and building crew into high gear.

Our sail-training program is also moving forward. The Board has approved the purchase of 4 – New Opti’s to our fleet for this summer. Also, there will be another new set of 420 sails. These will be great additions to the fleet as we continue to update our equipment.

Some other important changes are coming to the program coming this summer.

  1. Class schedule changes
    • Racing and Inter. II will now be on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday
    • Beginners and Inter I will be on Wednesday and Friday.
    • These changes allow for better scheduling for team racing and regattas.
  2. Registration
    • All registration forms are available online, CLICK to download the application form and mail it in.
    • NOTE: a deposit is due by March 30, 2007
    • Mandatory parent’s orientation meeting on Thursday, June 14 th.
    • Registrations forms will not be mailed this year!!!! (Web only).
    • If you have any difficulty please contact Melinda McAuliffe or Rick Lyman.
  3. Opening breakfast will be held Sunday, June 3 rd.
    • Please stay tuned for more news on this event. Last years breakfast was a great success. It renewed friendships and provided an important fundraising function for our sail-training program.

I would also like to thank the members of the sail training committee for all their help with keeping this program so strong. But, we can always use more hands. Please keep eye out for the work parties that will come this spring. We need skilled people to help with boat repair and maintenance.

We look forward to having many new sailors in the Beginners and Intermediate I fleet this year. If your child is 8 and older, they can have a wonderful summer of sailing at TYC. So, come down the hill from the pool and join our kids on the water.

Looking forward to fair winds and a warm summer.

Rick Lyman, sail training.

Jonathan

Let's get together to see Jonathan Horvath
in Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew

Jonathan Horvath, one of our great instructors from 2006, is one of the lead actors in a production of Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew. The show will run Wed., April 11 through Sun., April 15 with shows at 8:00p.m. Wed-Sat and matinees at 2:00p.m. Sat and Sun. Tickets are $5.00 and the show is at the Pell Chafee Performance Center on Empire St. We would like to get a group of sail training kids (and any parents interested as well!) to go see Jonathan. Please email Melinda McAuliffe MINKY373@aol.com if you are interested in attending and which show you would prefer (Fri night, Sat matinee, Sat night, etc.). Majority will rule, and we will reserve a group of tickets. Please respond by March 15 if you are interested!

JULY 2006

The summer sailing program is underway! The 420 Advanced Racing class had their first regatta on July 5 and team racing has also begun. The NBYA regatta schedule is noted on the calender and the regatta schedule link Please check the NBYA website for regatta information, including registration and permission forms. Parents are responsible for transporting all racers and their boats.

In our ongoing efforts to improve communication, we are developing a e-mail list for sail training. We will be sending out a test message soon. Please let us know if you do not receive a message by the end of the month.

Save the date: Friday, August 18th at 6:00p.m. under the tent. $10/family before 8/12 and $12/family at the door. We will supply the hotdogs and hamburgers, as well as paper goods.
We are asking each family attending awards night to bring the following:
Last names of A-H: cold drinks and chips
Last names of I-P: finger desserts plus one large Hershey’s chocolate bar (for smores)
Last names of Q-Z: salads with serving spoons

Thanks,
The Sail Training Committee

MAY 2006

The first annual Tiverton Yacht Club Sail Training May breakfast was held on May 7 at St. Christopher’s Church. Thanks to all who attended and helped make this a very successful fundraiser for us! We raised enough to buy two sets of sails!

A very special thank you to the Tiverton area businesses that supported us with their very generous donations:

  • Coastal Roasters Coffee
  • Cumberland Farms
  • Grand Central Grocery
  • Mike Galvin/ The Sakonnet Fish Company restaurant

Thanks to all that donated items for our raffle baskets and brought baked goods as well.

And of course, a great, big thank you to St. Christopher’s church for allowing us to use their facilities.

Reminder: The MANDATORY Parent Orientation meeting will be held Thursday, June 15 th at 7:00p.m. under the tent. A parent/student handbook will be given out at this time. The remaining balances of class fees are due at this time. For those students attending sail training for the first time, you will be required to purchase the text Start Sailing Right for $15.00. These will be available for purchase at the meeting.

The Sail Training Committee is hard at work preparing for this season. We will be having work week-ends on June 10 and 17 at the TYC site. Any and all help is appreciated.

Thanks,
The Sail Training Committee

MARCH 2006

  1. Reminder! Early registration for sail training is due March 30 , 2006. Please download your application from the sail training website and send it in. Early registration enables you to take advantage of lower registration fees, so don’t delay!
  2. The sail training committee would like to encourage all students to bring their own boats. However, this is, by no means, mandatory to participate in sail training. On this note, Vanguard Sailboats in Portsmouth is holding its annual “Boat Swap” on Saturday, April 24, 2006. This is an excellent way to purchase used equipment at very reasonable prices. Students who participate in racing may want to have their own equipment for the sake of performance. If enough people are interested, Vanguard has been very amenable to working out “package deals” as well (i.e. buy 4 or more boats…).
  3. Save the Date-the May breakfast is on! The breakfast will be held at St. Christopher’s church (right at the entrance of Riverside Dr.) on May 7, 2006 at 10:45 (after the 9:30 services). We would like to ask all students who are planning on participating in Sail Training this summer to be involved. Please plan to attend the breakfast and bring your relatives, friends, and neighbors too! All funds raised will go towards the purchase of new equipment for sail training.

FEBRUARY 2006

The sail training committee is hard at work preparing for the 2006 season. There are a few IMPORTANT changes taking place:

  1. It is imperative to have an estimate of the number of students we will have for the summer 2006 season. In this time of fiscal uncertainty, we must utilize all our funds effectively. With careful planning, we will be able to run a successful program. PLEASE TAKE A MOMENT TO EMAIL SAIL TRAINING (maritimemarketing@cox.net or MINKY373@aol.com) or use the link directly from the sail training website, and tell us how many students you plan on sending, as well as what class they will attend. Your help in this matter is greatly appreciated, and your timely response will help the committee immensely.
  2. The registration for sail training in on the “new” sail training section of the TYC website. YOU WILL NOT BE RECEIVING A REGISTRATION PACKET INTHE MAIL. You can download a registration packet as a PDF of Word file. Please download the form, fill it out completely, and send it in, along with your $100.00 deposit per student to: TYC, Attn. Sail Training P.O.Box 54, Tiverton, RI, 02878. Registration is due March 30 th. If you are unable to download a form, please call Melinda McAuliffe (401-683-0001) and a form will be sent to you.
  3. The new sail training website is still under a bit of construction, so you’ll notice a few dates missing. We will update this information as soon as it becomes available.
  4. Class fees: There is a nominal increase this year. If you were to compare our fees to other programs in the area, you’ll find that we are certainly a bargain. The new class fee schedule is as follows:

Early registration, before March 30th, 2006.
Beginners, Inter. I, Cruising: $425
Inter. II, Racing: $475
Please note $100 deposit per student is due before March 30 th as well.

March 30th thru June 15th:
Beginners, Inter. I, Cruising: $450
Inter. II, Racing: $500

Please note the MANDATORY Parent Orientation meeting will be held June 15th.
After June 15 th there will be a $25.00 late fee per class.

  1. Cruising Class: Our popular cruising class will return this summer, however, it will move to a Tues-Thurs. class.
  2. FUNDRAISER NEWS: We will be holding a “May breakfast” as a fundraiser for Sail training on Sunday, May 7 th, 2006 at St. Christopher’s church after the 9:30 services. We will need lots of help to make this a successful venture! Our plan is to have the students involved in the sail training program act as waiters and waitresses while their parents help out with the cooking. We would like to have as much food and supplies donated as possible to keep our expenditures to a minimum. We are asking for volunteers to help out with a May breakfast subcommittee; please let us know if you can help.

We look forward to hearing from you. Please take a moment to send us that email about your summer plans and download your registration packet and send it in, as well!

Thank you! Sail Training Committee

Fall 2005

The Sail Training Summer 2005 season ended with awards night on August the 19th.  Please watch for a picture page that will be posted on the sail training Web site with pictures from awards night, race week, and a few other events.  Check out the NBYA Web site link for the season's final standings.  TYC was well represented.  There are loads of pictures from Matthew Cohen photography from Race Week:  www.COHENPHOTOGRAPHY.com.

If you submitted your "Little Red Book" at the start of sail training, you should have received it back at awards night.  We will continue with the "Start Sailing Right" curriculum from U.S. Sailing, so remember to save your books for next year.  When you complete your book, you can turn it in to U.S. Sailing for a certificate of completion.  We  had three students that completed their books this summer:  Lucy Lyman, Peter Wright, and Amy Larson.  Well done!

We have decided to sell ALL the remaining Capri boats.  Please contact Rick Lyman for availability and pricing.  There are some great deals!

Sail Training will be having a work weekend on Sept 24th and 25th to tend to winter storage of our fleet.  Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Finally, the Sail Training Committee is already working and planning for a successful 2006 program.  Keep checking the sail training Web site for new information.  Keep an eye out for the 2006 registration packet that will be available as a PDF file to download and send in.  We are asking for all applications to be sent in by March 30, 2006.  Note that this is earlier than in the past, but we feel it is crucial to the planning of the program.

Thank you,

Sail Training
