From the ashes, the Tiverton Yacht Club will rise again! |
June 3, 2003
Fire tragically struck our beloved yacht club at approximately 5:00 am this morning. The building is a total loss, but due to the early morning time of the blaze the building was unoccupied and no one was injured.
The remaining structure was torn down this afternoon and the rubble will be fenced off and a police guard will be on site for 24/7 until the site is safe. We will have the rubble removed in the next few weeks and begin setting up a temporary operation to begin our Sail Training and Swim Programs on schedule. The two-stall garage will probably become our temporary office and we will have a porta-potty set up next to it. Temporary power and phone will be setup for the temporary office.
Many local yacht clubs have already called and offered assistance. We are insured and will be able to build a new club, although we cannot replicate the old one. We need help in setting up our temporary operation ASAP. Please offer your support and lend a hand whenever you can to help us recover from this tragic event in the 47-year history of our wonderful clubhouse.
Please call me, Polly Ney or Stu Hardy to help.

Send us your memories of the TYC and we'll post them here.
It's a sad day for TYC, but we have to hold our heads up and move on and despite the loss, and business as usual will go on at TYC and we will prevail and move on.
It is a tragic loss for all of us. But, hopefully we can rebuild. We joined last year and TYC is the best! Pat Carney
So much of our lives were spent at this club, some second and third generations. No matter what is built in its place it will never be the same. It took so much memorabilia with it, but it can never take the wonderful memories that we all share. Pat Curran
"It’s a sad, sad thing to see it like that, everybody had so much fun down there." Frank Raposa, one of the club’s three trustees and a former commodore
