COMMODORE'S

REPORT

It’s finally spring and everyone is enjoying the nice weather. Activity is under way to clean the beach and club house, prepare the boats for Sail Training and get the marina ready for all the pleasure boats. Hopefully, you all have reviewed this year's calendar and the participation qualifying tasks you can volunteer for. The collection of our club fees has gone extremely well this year and we have had continuous improvement for the last four years. Thank you for paying your club fees on time. All members are equal and paying on time is fair to all members.

We have been gathering many proposals to upgrade the club house. We are looking to expand parking behind the club house, improve the concrete patio to the south of the club house, get a new roof and install a new front
door. The club house will be the focus for our capital expenditures for the next few years.

The Marina Committee is busy building new docks and putting the finishing touches on the lockers. Last years organization of dingy and small boat storage was very successful and beneficial to all marina members. Sail Training is expected to be better than ever and the second year of small boat racing is the talk of the town. We are also working on two pesky problems that you should know about: access to the right of way to the north of the club house and parking on the west side of Riverside Drive. We have retained an attorney to handle the right of way issue and we are working with the local businesses and some Riverside neighbors to resolve the parking issue.

Mark the date of May 10 on your calendar, and attend the Open House. Food and entertainment will be provided. It is a great way to see your TYC friends after the winter and kick off the summer.

Your Commodore,

Stephen DePaola

House Report

The House Committee continues to look for mature persons who are interested in serving as Club Stewards during the 2003 season. Compensation is competitive and hours are very flexible. Interested parties should contact co-chairs Polly Ney 401-635-0097 or Stu Hardy 401-625-9870.

The club house should get a new roof this spring. The existing roof, installed many years ago, is leaking, and is a threat to the structure of the building. The roofer will also replace many rotting soffit and fascia boards. Much more needs to be done to improve the club house, including new windows and much external carpentry. Please contact the co-chairs if you are interested in doing some basic carpentry jobs, such as porch railing repairs.

The Board of Directors has approved a new, higher fee schedule for club house rentals. Contact the co-chairs for details, or consult the Rules section of the 2003 Log Book.

Log Book

Information for this year’s log book is currently being updated. Lew Mutty, TYC Secretary and fellow member of the Membership Committee, now chaired by Jon Bixby, has been busy with this important assignment. If you need a change, whether it is a person’s name or the name of your boat, please contact Lew or myself at 508-673-1118 or e-mail jimdee@worldnet.att.net today!

We would like to include your e-mail address in the log book if you could send it to us.

There is still time to place an ad in this year’s log book. This is a very well used publication and if you place an ad in it, it will certainly help to attract the attention of our members to your business.

Prices for placing ads in the log:

1/2 page ad — $25

Full page ad — $40

If you are interested in placing an ad, please contact me at 508-673-1118 or e-mail at: jimdee@worldnet.att.net

VESSEL INSPECTIONS

On May 17, a representative of the U.S. Sail and Power Squadron will be at our marina to do vessel inspections. Starting at 8:30 in the morning, Bill Loeseke and his crew of inspectors will do vessel inspections on those boats which have pre-registered by calling Carey Reeder (Marina Co-Chair) at 401-624-7524.

Each inspection takes about 30 minutes and if passed, the boat owner is given a certification decal. If you have never had a certification, now is the time to have one to insure that your vessel is up to code. Additionally, with the higher surveillance activities of the Coast Guard you are showing them that you are current on your registration and inspections, so please sign up for this important activity. If you are not in a slip at the docks, the T-dock will be open for vessel inspection.

Dinghy Racing 2003

This year’s evening dinghy racing series will commence on Thursday, June 19. Races will be run every Thursday from the 19th of June through Thursday, the 14th of August, with the exception of the 4th of July week when we will race on Tuesday, July 1, rather than Thursday.

The series is for Lasers and Sunfish. First gun will go off at 6 pm with the expectation of having three or more races each evening

Thursday, June 26, we will be holding a dinghy racing symposium to offer sailing tips and instruction. The symposium will be conducted on land followed by exercises on the water. We encourage everyone interested in becoming involved in this racing to join us. The symposium evening should be fun, informative, and hopefully, a catalyst to expand participation in the club's dinghy racing.

The Dinghy Racing Committee members, Mike Hill, Bill Jones, Dave Stewart and John Perkins, are engaged in efforts to make Lasers and Sunfish available to those who wish to become involved. Our own boats will be available for loan when we are not racing and we will be looking for boats to purchase at good prices so new participants can acquire boats with minimal hassle and expense.

Last season, we had ten to fifteen boats on line, most weeks. This season, let’s up that to fifteen to twenty boats. To contact any one of the committee members just call us. Please find our telephone numbers and e-mails below.

Here’s to some fun in the setting sun in the basin this year.

Junior Activities

Junior activities will kick off with a splash at our first pool party, on Thursday, June 26. In addition to many swimming races other popular events, including the big and little splash and the penny dive, will be held. Parents are welcome to attend.

My wife and I invite you to become a member of our committee. With your help, many additional junior events may be planned, including dances, art exhibits, a talent show and swim parties for our very young in the afternoon.

Please contact me at 508-673-1118 to become an active member. Your involvement in junior activities not only helps our young members, but also fulfills the requirement for your participation portion of your membership.

The Garden

As the first signs of spring appear my wife and I (along with Mimi Mutty, Polly Ney and Audrey Feld) think about the garden. If any member would like to donate a piece of a perennial to our garden we would be very appreciative. Please contact me at 508-673-1118 and we will arrange a time to receive your donation.

Thanks in advance!!

Jim and Dee Rogers

POOL

The pool company will uncover and open the pool the week of May 12 and we are hiring this year's life guards. We will try to open the pool for the weekend of June 14-15 and then June 20, for the season. We will need a couple of small work parties over the summer to move back the fence around the filter to make room for the chlorine; finish off the drain system near the filter motor, replace the AC panel support board, add an automatic switch to control the pool heater, line the filter area with concrete pavers to get out of the mud and break up a piece of the apron on the southeast side of the pool, where it looks like we have some settlement. Volunteers should call Wayne Karzenski at 401-625-1362 .

MARINA

All small boats must be stored on club racks and the marina will supply small boat transporters (hand trailers) because of the limited space we have on the beach. We already have transporters for the sail training boats members could use. We may have to buy one more size or repair some we have. Some members had their small boats on their own trailers last summer and took up a lot of valuable space.

For the past three weeks a small crew has done wonders and three new or repaired floats are ready to go into the water on April 12. All slip holders or their representatives must be at the launching as part of their responsibilities in having a slip. Work starts at 8:00 am. Mooring and dinghy holders need to sign up for some marina task to retain their spots for this year.

It should be remembered that all slip and mooring holders are automatically part of the Marina Committee and help the Marina Co-Chairs develop and enforce the rules of the marina. There will be a meeting of the Marina Committee at 11:30 am on April 12, just after we finish launching the docks.

The marina work crews still need people for the painting projects, cleanup, and dock repair teams. Please call any of the co-chairs and sign up.

Please mark your calendar for May 17 to schedule a vessel safety inspection by the US Sail and Power Squadron representative. Please call Carey at 401-624-7524 to set a time for your inspection.

We are going to have a great looking marina this year.

Best in boating,

Carey

SAIL TRAINING

The 2003 Sail Training season is scheduled to begin on Monday, June 23. Look for registration forms in the mail. If you have a child interested in participating in the Sail Training Program and have not received a registration form, call Cheryl Franklin at 401-683-0280. A deposit and completed registration form is due on May 1. Remember, class sizes are limited and expected to fill quickly. There will be a mandatory Parent’s Orientation meeting on Thursday June 5.

The Sail Training Committee is looking for volunteers for two weekend mornings. Please call Peter or Cheryl Franklin at 401-683-0280 or any member of the Sail Training Committee if you can help in any way. Let’s make this a safe, fun season for our children.
