COMMODORE’S REPORT:
Dear fellow TYC member,
While it’s still pretty cold outside, our summer season will soon be upon us. Your Board of Directors has been at work through the winter and I’m pleased to say that considerable progress has been made in all areas.
Our summer programs are planned to run pretty much like last year. Sail training plans and staffing are well in hand. You have received an invitation to a breakfast 10:30 am -1:30 pm on May 7 at St. Christopher Church. I hope you plan to attend for good food, sociability, and to help raise funds for the sailing program. By the way, the committee has several excess and well used Capri 14 sailboats for sail at very reasonable prices.
The swim program will go on using the trailer built last year for changing and toilet facilities. Minor changes in schedules will be announced later.
I am pleased that a number of new members have joined us during the winter months. They all have indicated a desire to participate in club activities so I take that as a plus.
The club will again be racing Wednesday nights with the Spar Island Racing Association.
Racing will begin on May 17 and continue through August 30. Additional events of interest to sailors will be:
May 18 - Salute to Sailing, a presentation by Gary Jobson, National Chairman of Leukemia Regattas and a blood cancer survivor. This evening event will take place at the Newport Yachting Center during the Spring Boat Show
June 28 - Mount Hope Sailing Association (MOHOSA) Wednesday Night Worlds
August 18, 19 - Leukemia Cup Regatta-Headquartered at the Herreshoff Museum
September 10 - MOHOSA Regatta
September 17 - The Charlie LaRoue Race - an up and down the river race honoring the memory of one of our best sailors.
October 21 - Awards Banquet
Lastly, I’m sure you all want to know where we stand with regard to rebuilding our clubhouse. As you know, we’ve had approval from DEM for our septic system design for some time. We’ve more recently gotten approval from Coastal Resources Management to begin construction. We must now get a building permit and in order to do that we need fire department approval of the safety features of our design. Changes in the RI Fire Code as a result of the Station Nightclub fire made it necessary to make several minor changes to our design. These have been done, so we are about ready to file for our building permit. Unfortunately, time has run out on our hopes to get the project under way before summer activities start, and construction would interfere with pool activities. We now plan to start in the fall. We expect our neighbors to appeal our building permit, but are confident that any appeals will be denied. The Tiverton Town Council is expected to approve a change in zoning requirements that will make it easier to continue, even expand a pre-existing non-conforming use and that will also be in our favor. It’s been a long and expensive fight, but at last we’re winning.

Junior Activities:
Plans for another exciting summer for junior members are now being made. A pool party will be held every Thursday night as part of family night. Prizes will be awarded to the juniors who compete in the swim races, the big splashes, pool basketball hoops and the popular penny dive where youngsters dive into the pool in search of a hundred pennies.
After an hour of pool activities the playing field shifts to the front lawn where two miniature golf setups are located. Once again, youngsters compete for prizes as they attempt to get one of their three golf balls into that magic hole.
Through the years these pool parties have attracted hundreds of club members who still recount these adventures when they return as adult club members.
A Talent Night will be held after a pool party in July. I am soliciting ten youngsters who either sing or play an instrument to participate in this evening of musical entertainment. The hour show will have a built-in audience as it will take place on a Thursday night. Adults are welcome to assist and participate as an entertainer if so desired! Please contact me soon.
A teenage dance will take place on a Friday night in August. If you would like to assist or chaperone, please let me know.
My wife and I thank you for your participation and assistance at last year’s junior events which were enjoyed by all. With your continued help we can make this summer even better than the previous one. I look forward to hearing from you.

Fund-raising Events:
Once all the plans are finalized, the t’s crossed and the i’s dotted, we will be announcing plans for a late summer cocktail party. At that time a brochure listing ways that we can support the funding of the new building will be presented. This will include your contributing to the purchase of a window, door, office equipment or kitchen equipment for the new building. For example, you could "purchase" a function room table for a donation of $100, a chair for $75, or a desk for the office for $500. A plaque in the shape of a sailboat will contain the donors’ names and will be placed on the wall of the function room. If you would like to help me with this fund-raising project, please call me at 508-675-0800 or e-mail me at jimdee@worldnet.att.net.

Pool Committee:
The sun is getting stronger, and before you know it summer will be on our doorstep! Our plan for the summer is to operate much as we did last summer. We are planning on opening the pool on Friday, June 23, at noon. I am hoping to coordinate the opening with our annual Pizza Challenge. If that is the case, we will remain open until 8 pm that night.
The open swim schedule for the summer will be the same as last year. We will be open from noon until 8 pm on Thursdays and noon until 6 pm for the remainder of the week. Thursdays are our pot luck family nights. We had record attendance last year and look forward to the same this summer. It is a great way to meet other members in a very low key environment.
We will be using our shower trailer again this year. We are looking for volunteers to help us keep this facility nice and clean. It is not much work, and experience has shown that it can all be done in 15 minutes without getting your hands dirty! It would be a real help to get a few members to pitch in and help out one day a week. If you can help, please e-mail me at wkarzenski@cox.net
LEUKEMIA AND LYMPHOMA SOCIETY PLANS FOR 2006 SAILING SEASON
SALUTE TO SAILING - Gary Jobson will again be the highlight speaker for the annual kick-off to the sailing season. Gary is a world-recognized expert and reporter on the sailing scene and is himself a blood cancer survivor. His visual and oral presentation will cover the 2004 Olympics in Athens, the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, the 2005 Rolex Trans-Atlantic Race and next year’s America’s Cup Race in Valencia, Spain. The event will take place at the Spring Boat Show at the Newport Yachting Center between 6 and 9 pm on Thursday, May 18. The $35 admission fee will also provide a light meal, two free drinks and two free tickets to the boat show, good any day.
LEUKEMIA-LYMPHOMA REGATTA - The Annual Regatta will again be run out of the Herreshoff Museum in Bristol on August 18 and 19. The event will be kicked off Friday night with a lobster/raw bar dinner at 5:30 pm. Race instructions will be distributed at that time. A cash bar will be available and various auctions will also take place during the evening.
The races this year will start on Saturday at 1 pm (not 11 am as before) in order to allow for the reliable afternoon wind to come in. PHRF racers will circle Prudence Island and various one-design circles will also be provided. Prizes will be awarded Saturday evening at a barbeque dinner. Cash bar will be available and various auction-type events will also take place during the evening.
Proceeds from the above events will go to research to fight blood cancers which have taken the lives of friends of most of us. Further information and tickets can be obtained from John Brady, 401-684-1858

Locker Memo
The TYC will soon be hard at work repairing and reconditioning the lockers. We would appreciate it if you would remove any contents and let us know what locker NUMBER you have, so we can keep it yours if you are renting one for the 2006 season. Please e-mail Paul at pjc0150@comcast.net. The workers do not want to have to cut any locks or be responsible for any contents. Work should be completed before the season starts and we will e-mail you when your locker is finished. Thank you for your co-operation.
