AUGUST 2007

COMMODORE’S MESSAGE

Dear Members,

Our summer season is in full swing, and all of our programs are up and running. The Board of Directors spends the winter months planning and working hard to make our summer season go smoothly. Our sail training program is a good example of just how well that hard work during the winter pays off. The program is near capacity, and we are providing the next generation the opportunity to learn to sail. Whether we turn these newest sailors into the next Ken Read or we just show them the thrill of the wind filling the sails and give them a lifelong love of sailing, our program will have been a success.

The social calendar has been filling up and it’s been nice to see so many new faces at these events. It’s been a challenge for our Social Committee to provide a full calendar of events with the facility that we have been forced to work with the last few years. So, thank you for supporting their efforts. We have had a lot of support from around the Bay from other yacht clubs since our fire. The Bristol Yacht Club has generously extended an invitation to all our members to attend their social functions. They are hosting a catered event with a steel band in August. We will send you more info via e-mail soon, but please consider participating in what promises to be a fun evening.

In our quest for a new building, we have presented our case to a judge, our final brief has been submitted in Newport Superior Court, and we are awaiting a decision from the judge. In the meantime, the Building Committee is moving forward with plans for rebuilding. A package has been assembled and put out for bids to contractors, and the Finance Committee is also working on a package to present to lenders for financing. We are eagerly awaiting the judge’s decision, but we are also moving forward with plans to rebuild so we are ready to act once a decision comes in. Thank you for your support over the past few years. It is encouraging to see the list of new members that have been added recently. As we get closer to a new building we will be having a membership drive with the goal of bringing our membership to a capacity of 200 memberships with a waiting list. If each member can sign up a friend, we will have achieved our goal. So I encourage all of you to bring a friend to the club and show them why we love the Tiverton Yacht Club. I believe there is no better place than New England in the summertime, and we bring that up close at TYC. Have a wonderful summer and be safe on the water.

SOCIAL REPORT

The potluck dinners are in full swing and members are having a great time! The kids continue to enjoy the pool and games (thank you, Jim, Dee, and Phyllis!) while the adults are socializing. For upcoming themes, please refer to the calendar on the website. Keep the laughter, good times, and great food coming!

Upcoming events include an adult cocktail party on July 13 and a membership meeting to coincide with the potluck night on July 26.

Many thanks to all the Social Committee members for all their help in executing Thursday night potluck dinners. We welcome any help and suggestions for future events. We are working on some additional upcoming events. More information will follow!

See you on Thursday night!

POOL REPORT

The hot weather has arrived and the pool is being enjoyed by many members. Although it might seem that our facility is functioning normally, we really are still operating in a temporary mode with the use of our portable bathroom trailer. Since we are not hooked up to a septic system this means we have to pump our holding tanks often. Just like on a boat this is an inconvenience and an expense. We can use everyone’s help to reduce wastewater. If at all possible, use the Port-a-Johns across the street. These units recycle the wastewater. Use the outside shower near the pool parking lot gate instead of the trailer shower. The sun heats this water nicely. And most important of all, be sure the faucets are turned off and the toilet has stopped running. We have had several instances where a stuck toilet handle has filled the holding tanks prematurely. Finally, A&D Sanitation has helped the TYC out greatly with the pumping and management of the wastewater. If you live in the Tiverton area and have a septic system, I strongly encourage you to return the favor and contact them when you need service. Their number is 401-624-2254.

JUNIOR ACTIVITIES REPORT

Every Thursday night, junior games are held in the pool as part of family night. Youngsters enjoy the swimming races, the water basketball and volleyball games, as well as the popular penny dive.

A challenge to them and their parents awaits after they leave the pool and begin the golf competition on our two golfing mats. Prizes are awarded to the youngsters for both the pool and golf games.

In August Phyllis Ibbotson will again chair the Junior Art Exhibit and Silent Auction. Last year over 20 juniors created a multitude of items that were displayed at a Thursday family night. Please check the sign in the tent which will show you how you can participate.

On Labor Day, September 3, the annual Labor Day junior activities will take place beginning at 2:00 pm. In addition to pool games there will be other activities including sack races, a limbo contest and the always popular egg throw. A potluck supper will be held at the conclusion of the event about 5:00 pm.

If you would like to volunteer for this traditional "end of summer ritual," please contact me at jimdee@worldnet.att.net today.

TREASURER’S REPORT

Thanks to an increase in the membership, an expanded sail training program and successful fund-raising efforts, the TYC finances are in good shape as we reach the halfway point of the summer season. Revenue has increased modestly and our expenses are on budget.

I am working with other Board members and conducting preliminary discussions with lenders on how to structure a financing package for the new clubhouse. Soon we will know the estimated cost of the building and then we can figure out a combination of funding options that we will propose to the Board and full membership. No matter what happens, we benefit from increasing the membership so please encourage friends, neighbors, relatives, co-workers, old boyfriends/girlfriends ….. to join.

A few members who work in commercial lending have expressed interest in working with TYC. If you know anyone who is interested in lending to us, please contact me.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, thanks to you all for supporting the club (and of course, your prompt payments).

MARINA REPORT

During the TYC Board of Directors meeting on Tuesday night, July 10,2007, the board members discussed the progress of the dredging effort and the need to assess marina members for the upcoming work. The board approved assessments based on the following: slip ($500), mooring ($250), and wet/dry dock storage ($100). If a member has both a slip or mooring and dinghy (wet or dry) storage, the invoice will be for the higher assessment. The TYC Board of Directors understand that the slip and mooring amounts are consistent with the amounts proposed to members last year or the year before. The total assessment should be around $12,000 - $13,000. Thanks. TYC Board of Directors.

We still need your copy of the slip/mooring lease agreement and insurance binder. Please download the info needed from our marina web site . If you have already sent it in, thank you. Marina
