February 2003

COMMODORE'S REPORT

A happy, healthy and prosperous New Year. As I sit writing the Commodore’s Report for the February Fair Winds issue, it is 3 degrees Fahrenheit outside! I get through times like this thinking about the warm summer days at the Tiverton Yacht Club with friendly people, fun activities and our sailboat. We had a great year in 2002 and the plans are to make 2003 even better.

The Marina Committee is already planning to finish the controlled wet and dry small boat program, that was so successful in its first year, and complete the new lockers. The Membership Committee is working hard to consolidate the membership information and survey new, senior and exiting members to make the club better. They also are working on a new member mentor program. The Sail Training Committee is locating and hiring this year's instructors and brainstorming on possible program improvements. The Race Committee is busy trying to expand the program to possibly include long-range day races and refine the Thursday night small boat racing. The House Committee is working on major capital improvements to the clubhouse, searching for a head steward and drafting new clubhouse rental agreements. The Junior, Swim and Pool Chairs are also busy preparing fun-filled summer activities.

I would like to send a special thanks to my hard-working officers, board of directors and committee chairs. Although all this activity is under way we are still missing a Rear Commodore, Social Chair and Cruising Chair. The Rear Commodore position is
very important to fill, because that person will be our Commodore in three more years. If you have been a committee chair or member of the board of directors, please consider filling this challenging position. The Social and Cruising Chairs are also important to generate activities for club members to get together, make new friends, see old friends and just have fun. Many members are willing to run a social or cruising event, but not chair the committee. The committee chair only has to coordinate the different activities, not run them. Please stepup and fill these open positions.

My personal goals for this year are to continue to improve communication and improve the procedures/operations of the various committees. Everyone works very hard and I would like to see their jobs streamlined and simplified. The new Membership Participation Program went quite well last year and I would like to see additional participation this year. About 45% of the memberships participated in 2002. Let’s make that 60% this year. Contact a committee chair before April and volunteer for a planned project to complete your 2003 participation requirement.
But let’s not forget to have lots of fun this season.

Your Commodore,

Steve DePaola

HOUSE COMMITTEE

The House Co-Chairs are looking for mature stewards/head steward for the 2003 season, with duties beginning weekends from May 3 to October 13, and full-time from Memorial Day Weekend to Labor Day. Salary is highly competitive.

The House Committee also needs volunteers to help develop a plan/schedule for clubhouse repairs and improvements, and to identify suitable contractors for roofing/carpentry, as well as window and door replacement. Contact Polly Ney (401) 635-0097 or Stu Hardy (401) 625-9870.

JUNIOR ACTIVITIES

Preparations for another exciting summer for all junior members are now under way! In addition to the festive Thursday night pool parties, teenage dances and cookouts are being planned.

To celebrate the vocal talents of our young members, a musical review will also be held. There will also be an art show, where members can exhibit their work at a weekend art festival.

My wife and I invite you to become members of the Junior Committee. Members are needed to plan events and to chaperone the proposed summer dances.

Please contact me at (508) 673-1118 to become an active member. Your involvement in junior activities not only helps our young members, but also fulfills the requirement for your participation portion of your membership.

Jim Rogers, Junior Chair

LOG BOOK

Information for this year’s log book is currently being updated. Lew Mutty, TYC Secretary, and fellow member of the Membership Committee, now chaired by Jon Bixby, has been busy with this important assignment. If you need to update or correct a member's name, address, phone number, e-mail address (see note), names and birth dates of children ages 5 to 21, name of yacht, LOA, builder, or member owner, please contact Lew or myself at (508) 673-1118 or send me an e-mail at jimdee@worldnet.att.net today! We would like to include your e-mail address in the log book.

Prices for placing ads in the log book are as follows.

1/2 page ad — $25

Full-page ad — $40

If anyone is interested in placing an ad, please contact me at (508) 673-1118 or e-mail jimdee@worldnet.att.net

Jim Rogers,

Log Book Chair

NOTE: Members who have e-mail addresses but do not want them published may specify "private please." We will keep private e-mail addresses in a "private" file for use only by the club for newsletter and notice mailings with addresses suppressed (BCC). Please help us collect these addresses. We can save money by making distributions by e-mail. We need everyone's participation, because we must mail at least 200 pieces to qualify for bulk mail postage rates. If everyone participates we will be able to eliminate the printed copy of the newsletter, thus saving our club money. For those few members who don't have e-mail, we'll mail them a hard copy. Just be sure to notify the editor.

THE GARDEN

On these cold winter nights it’s nice to think about the colorful garden that we had at the club last year. A special thank you, once again, to Mimi Mutty, Polly Ney and Audrey Feld for their generous donations of perennials for our garden.

It’s time now to think about this year’s garden! If you have any perennial plants, a piece would be just fine. To donate, please contact me at (508) 673-1118, as soon as the first robins of spring appear in your backyard.

SAIL TRAINING

The TYC Sail Training Program for the 2003 summer is under way. Committee members have been busy building volunteer lists as well as searching for certified instructors for our program.

The Sail Training Committee, along with the Race Committee, are working together to build a larger and stronger Thursday night Family Race Program. This Race Program is for both experienced racers and those who just want to get out on the water and have some fun. With lots to do and many new ideas, everyone’s help would be greatly appreciated.

In an effort to avoid a last minute rush, we are looking for volunteers to help prepare the TYC fleet of boats for the summer sailing season. With enough volunteers, this can be accomplished in just two weekend mornings. Your help is needed on this project to ensure a safe, trouble-free learning experience for our children. Any members who have any questions, or are looking to become more involved in this program, please call Peter Franklin at (401) 683-0280 or e-mail pafranklin@cox.net.

RACE COMMITTEE

Planning is well under way for another exciting season of racing at the Tiverton Yacht Club. The first race in the Spring Series will take place on May 14. Soooo... in spite of the snow, start sanding.

MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE

Hello everyone. The Membership committee will meet February 24, March 24 and April 14 at The Malcom Company office, 1676 East Main Road, Portsmouth, at 7:00 pm. We have a lot to do and we need volunteers. Working the days of the Open House is a good way to fulfill your assessment fee volunteer hours requirement.

We need to do the following:

1) Find volunteers for this committee.

2) Plan and organize the Open House, as well as to work the Open House.

3) Find one member to work with Jim Rogers to make sure all the member data in the Log Book is up to date, including the fleet information.

4) Find someone to receive and review all new member applications and make recommendations to the board or directors.

So far the committee includes:

- Jim Rogers (Log Book)

- Lew Mutty, Club Secretary

- Jim Wolstenholme, Member

- Jon Bixby, Membership Committee Chair
