LATE BREAKING NEWS!

The Town of Tiverton has issued the TYC a building permit for a our clubhouse!

COMMODORE’S REPORT (written prior to building permit being issued)

The Tiverton Yacht Club is definitely in the winter mode. The docks are out, the pool is tucked away, and the sail training fleet is put up for the cold winter ahead. Although it looks as if we’re in hibernation, I assure you each and every committee, along with your Board of Directors, is busy preparing for next season.

Lori Boivin has graciously agreed to take the position of Social Chairman. The Social Committee has planned a holiday party and is also putting together events for next season. It is important to keep the spirit of the club alive while we forge ahead to rebuild.

As your new Commodore, I would like to say I am proud of the members of the Board of Directors and all the committee chairs. They do a tremendous job and put in countless hours keeping the Tiverton Yacht Club running and providing smooth operations each season.

We continue to push forward for our building permit. The Building Committee has kept the process going and will continue to work to our goal of a new clubhouse. I speak for the entire Board when I say “thank you” for your continued support during these difficult times. Without our membership, our neighbors would have succeeded long ago in ridding us of our yacht club. We are confident that we will have a permit soon. We will keep you up to date with any appeals that are brought against us by our neighbors. Thank you again for your support and I look forward to serving as your Commodore for the next two years.

Commodore

BEACH LOCKERS

The 2006 repair of the TYC beach lockers held up well during the 2006 season. Only locker painting is anticipated for the 2007 season. Sometime in late April or early May, members will be notified of a one-day locker painting party. Your help will be greatly appreciated and make the task go faster.

There are plenty of unassigned beach lockers (all lockers are secured to prevent damage), so any member desiring one should contact Rich Toolin at 624-8946. Lockers are great for storing dinghy and boat equipment, beach stuff and sail training stuff, and are available on a year-long basis.

SILENT AUCTION - COCKTAIL PARTY

A social and silent auction for the benefit of the building fund will be held on Friday, April 27, 2007, at the Sakonnet Fish Co. from 7 pm to 10 pm. Bidding will end at 9:30 pm.

Jim and Dee Rogers are forming a committee for this event. Members who wish to solicit items for the auction are welcome to join Ernest Feld, Eric Baker and Lou Mutty, all of whom helped to make the last auction a success.

Mike Galvin will provide finger food and pastries for the event. There will be a cash bar.

Tickets for the auction are $5.00 per person.

Please call Jim at (508) 675-0800 if you would like to be a member of this committee. A meeting will be held toward the end of January.

JUNIOR ACTIVITIES

The Thursday Night Junior Pool Parties were very successful this summer. Every week a group of fifteen to twenty youngsters enjoyed the swimming races, penny dives, basketball games and the miniature golf ranges on the lawn. This activity brought the family together for an evening of fun.

The creativity of the youngsters was shown in the art auction that was held in August. Unique clay objects as well as some paintings were on display. All the pieces were sold in a silent auction that raised over $65 for the club.

While we hope to continue to do these pool parties, we welcome your participation. If anyone would like to sponsor an event for juniors, please call me at (508) 675-0800. I thank you for your past support and look forward to working with you again next summer.

Jim Rogers, Junior Chair

RACE REPORT

The Tiverton Yacht Club and the Spar Island Racing Association (SIRA) held a joint awards banquet on October 29, 2006. It was particularly pleasing to see a large crowd in attendance, which reflects the growing participation in the Wednesday Night Series.

Awards in Class A were presented to Seraphim, skippered by Dave Saurette, for first place in the Combined Summer Series. Second place went to Odraccas, sailed by Chuck Saccardo, and third to ‘R Buoy, John Brady.

Other awards were presented to Clank, owned by Rob Cooper and Joe Boivin, who placed well in Class C. The Charlie LaRoue Race was won by Lanny Goff, sailing Icon.

The schedule for 2007 will be posted on the Web site by January 30, 2007.

POOL REPORT

The 2006 pool season was another success! Swimming classes were well attended and we had many individuals and families use the pool throughout the summer. The Thursday night potluck suppers drew a great crowd and were reminiscent of the days when we actually had a house! If you haven’t participated, it is a great opportunity to meet old and new members, take a swim in the pool or just eat, drink, and talk. Pencil it in on your calendar for next year.

Our plans for next year are to operate as we did this summer. We will open as school lets out in mid to late June and continue through Labor Day. We hope to replace some of the deck chairs that have seen better days, if our budget allows. If anyone is interested in helping out around the pool, please drop me an e-mail at wkarzenski@cox.net.

BUILDING COMMITTEE UPDATE

Although it may seem like we are pushing a boulder up a mountain, we are actually making progress in our rebuilding effort. Our local building permit is the last approval needed. As of this writing, we have submitted the final drawings and plans and await the issuance of our permit. (Got it! -- Ed.) The committee has also begun to solicit bids for construction. Although there are likely to be challenges, we hope to construct the foundation and septic system before the summer season begins. We are beginning to formulate financing plans and anticipate presenting them to the membership in the spring along with cost estimates and a construction schedule. A critical aspect of our rebuilding plan is a robust membership. We encourage all members to recruit new members.

FINANCE COMMITTEE REPORT

Thanks to a continued strong commitment by TYC members, the club will complete the 2006 fiscal year in the black (that’s the good color in finance!). Even though we had a smaller membership base than prior years, we did a great job running a lean operation while still offering a full slate of programs and events. Foregoing some of our typical amenities of the past, in 2006 we were able to generate a respectable surplus that will be used in part toward rebuilding the clubhouse. To the envy of many businesses we have a strong balance sheet, good financial track record and a committed membership.

As we plan for 2007 and the financing of a new clubhouse, the Board of Directors will work with the various committees and the general membership to structure a package of options. One essential goal will be to increase the membership. We all have an interest in gaining more new members, so start talking to neighbors, friends and family about how great the TYC is. We thoroughly appreciate your loyal support - emotional, physical and financial – and look forward to a great 2007.

Treasurer

HOUSE REPORT

Another season without the help of paid stewards has created some inconvenience. However, the cooperation of members who helped on the marina, picked up litter and hauled trash to the dumpster is greatly appreciated. The substantial money saved in payroll costs will go to the re-building effort. Plans are under way to hire stewards as soon as the new clubhouse is up.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

SAIL TRAINING REPORT

It has been a busy fall. The youth program has been put to bed for another year!

1 The 420’s have been stored inside a heated mill in Fall River. Thanks to Chris Roemlein and the many hands that helped move them - in the rain!

2 The three power boats have been winterized at Steve’s Marina and returned for storage on the club property. This was more expensive than budgeted, but the engines needed more work to ensure an easy start to next season.

3 We were able to pull the docks and store them on the beach this winter. The thanks here go to Jeff and the Marina Committee.

4 All the equipment for the boats has been inventoried and stored in the garage.

5 Our one area of need is Opti repair. If anyone is able to do fiberglass work and would like to take an Opti home to repair, it would be a great help in starting the 2007 sailing season.

The committee will start planning for the 2007 season with our first meeting in January. Please join us as we look forward to another sailing season. We will, once again, run from the waterfront in a similar format to the past few years. We are getting very good at putting 50+ junior sailors on the water in this format, and look forward to the addition of many of the younger kids who enjoyed the pool last summer.

Sail training registration forms will once again be available online on the TYC Web site.

Remember, you will not receive a registration packet in the mail! Be sure to visit the Web site for information regarding sail training.

Once again, we hope to hold our May breakfast fund-raiser that was so successful for us last year! We welcome any and all help in planning for this event, especially someone to take on the fund-raiser chairperson position! The proceeds from last year’s event were used to purchase a set of 420 sails and to fund many of last summer’s sail training events, like “Pirate’s Day” and many pizza and ice cream parties!

Have a great winter and I hope for snow so all the winter sports can have a wonderful season.

Best regards,
Rick Lyman

SOCIAL REPORT

Our holiday party was a great success! Many thanks to Polly Ney and her crew for their tireless efforts. Mike Galvin and his team at Sakonnet Fish Co. put on a delicious buffet.

In 2007 watch for a silent auction fund-raiser at Sakonnet Fish Company, toward the end of April. More details to follow.

June will open the season with an adult cocktail party for officer commissioning. The highlight of the summer as always will be the Thursday evening pot luck dinners.

Please feel free to contact me with any ideas for events at buckley3@cox.net. As always, volunteers are needed and welcome.

Hope to see you soon and happy New Year!
