COMMODORE’S

REPORT

Summer is here and our warm weather activities are in full swing. Membership is full and member participation, a major initiative for this year, has increased. Your officers, board of directors and all the committee chairs and their members have done a great job so far this season.

All major tasks planned for this year are complete thanks to the help of so many, and in particular Rick Hall. Now that summer is here we can relax and enjoy the club, so enjoy your summer with your Tiverton Yacht Club members. More tasks will be scheduled for the fall if you were unable to assist in the spring.

The sailing program has upgraded its fleet and reduced the number of students to improve the quality of the instruction. The pool is open and the lifeguards are in place.

Our new stewards are on duty. Their names are Megan Griffin, Sara Schroeder, Kyle Martin, Josh Mello and Tim Ott. Please make them feel welcome and assist them in making the club run smoothly and safely. They are here to serve the membership and carry out rules and regulations.

We have reduced our mortgage by 50% and hope to pay it off in two more years. We now plan on embarking on beautifying the clubhouse with new windows, doors and general upgrades with yearly available capital funds.

We are in the process of developing a TYC Web site. The domain name is tivertonyachtclub.org, and although it’s not yet finished you are welcome to take a peek. We will be able to post important information and try to increase e-mail correspondence because "snail" mail has become so very costly. You can help save the club money by sending your e-mail address to Eric Baker at adswork@cox.net. He will build a TYC e-mail group, and notify you when it’s ready for viewing. This will be sent BCC (blind copy), so our e-mail addresses won’t be floating around cyberspace for others to see. E-mail is also timely. It takes us 25-30 days to publish, print and mail a newsletter. A Web site will cut the newsletter time in half, and make other communications immediate.

I am looking forward to a successful season and want to thank everyone in advance for his or her help and participation.

Happy sailing, boating, partying and swimming. Have a safe and happy summer.

Your Commodore,

Stephen DePaola

Leslea Berglund

All hold instructor certification from U.S. Sailing Association and are trained in first aid. All are veterans of the TYC sailtraining program, and Dan, Sarah and Matt have multi-year instructor experience.

The Narragansett Bay Yachting Association has scheduled the 2002 Junior Olympic Sailing Regatta (Race Week) for August 18-21, the week following the end of classes. The host club is Sail Newport. We hope and expect that a record number of junior sailors will represent TYC at this event.

Volunteers are needed to help with fund-raising activities. If interested, please call Pam Begg 625-1362.

Leukemia-Lymphoma Regatta News

This year’s Leukemia-Lymphoma Regatta will be held under the sponsorship of the Herreshoff Museum in Bristol on August 17, making it very convenient for Tiverton Yacht Club members to participate. Not only will this be a sailing regatta, this year for the first time it will include a predicted log event for power boats. If you neither sail nor motor, you must eat, and the event will be preceded by a lobster and clam boil at the museum on Friday night for a very reasonable $35 donation. For further information and/or to order tickets contact John Brady at 401-583-1858 or JFBRADY@aol.com.

Last year John represented the TYC and won first place on the water and was fourth in money raised thanks to TYC member donations. This year John is urging other TYC members to participate in this fine event which honors our Ron Carr, who was a leukemia victim. John will also be contacting the TYC membership to urge their support by a donation to the society as he did last year.

Social Committee

Thanks to Elaine DePaola and Sandy Greenwood for hosting the Opening Night in May. They did a great job and everyone that attended enjoyed the event.

Alicia Bjornson organized the Earth Day Clean-up of the club. With help from many of the members, the grounds were spruced up and the house scrubbed from top to bottom. Thanks Alicia, and all those that worked with her.

Thursday night Potluck Suppers will begin on June 27, and run through August 29. Please contact Janice Gray at 401-641-2266 or jmgfire@aol.com to chair one of these evenings.

Saturday, July 20, Tuscany on the Sakonnet will be held at TYC. This will be an adult event, featuring Italian fare. If you would like to help with this event, please contact Marissa White at 401-683-4628 or marissa.r.white@cox.net.

In early August, Susan and Eduardo Rodriguez will be hosting the popular Caribbean Night. Please contact Susan if you would like to volunteer for this event. Susan can be reached at 625-1199 or sculptoy@aol.com.

Thursday, August 1, the first annual Dinghy Regatta will be held. The regatta features Sunfish, Laser and Opti racers with a cookout following. Please contact John Perkins if you have questions or would like to volunteer for this event. John can be reached via e-mail at johnperkins@THYCO.com.

We will be planning a Wine Tasting Social sometime in late August or early September - contact Janice Gray if you have ideas for this event.

Marina ALERT!

All unclaimed/abandoned boats without TYC storage stickers will be disposed of July 15, 2002. TYC boat storage stickers will be mailed to members that paid for boat storage before July 1. Please attach your sticker before July 15. The TYC boat storage stickers will have the boat storage location on the sticker. All wet and dry storage locations will be identified and checked daily by the stewards. Please observe the transient dock rules so all TYC boaters have an opportunity to use it. Do not stay longer than allowed and do not leave your boat unattended. The TYC captain must be with the boat at all times. If you need a long stay at the dock to perform work, ask the steward if there is a vacant slip available. There is a sign posted with the transient dock rules. Stewards will be monitoring the transient dock usage and generating automatic invoices at $2 per foot if the rules are not followed. Please do not challenge or question the stewards, it is their job. You may discuss the invoice with your marina chair Rob Gray.

All TYC slip and mooring renters are required to file a float plan with the steward listing destination(s) and departure and return times so we can rent your vacant mooring or slip. This has three advantages. First it increases the marina income and will help to keep fees down. Secondly, it allows visiting boats (some from other yacht clubs) a place to stay. And most importantly it could be information someone might need to contact you in an emergency. If the club is not open, please call in your float plan or slip it under the door.

CANDY BOAT SLIDE SHOW

The Candy Boat Association will present a slide show at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 28, at the club. If you have 35mm slides that you would like to share, please contact Richard Toolin at 624-8946 or rtoolin@aol.com

Weekly Junior Pool Parties

Enthusiasm for a great summer is reflected in the happy smiles of the youngsters who are participating in the weekly pool parties. Not only do they compete for prizes in swimming contests but also in basketball games in the water and golf games on the south lawn of the club.

Dee Rogers organizes the lollipop contest and makes sure that each participant whether they are 4 or 12 years old receives a lollipop at the end of the party!

We invite you to attend our parties and welcome all adults who would like to assist in the games.

A Music Review

Several members expressed an interest in participating in a musical review at the club. A night in late July will be designated where members will be able to sing or perform on a musical instrument. If any member has a good sound system and mike that he could loan us for the night, please contact me as soon as possible. Also, if there are any adults who would like to perform, please contact me at 508-673-1118.

Craft Fair

The 25th Annual Craft Fair will be held on Sunday, August 4, from 10 am until 4 pm. While several crafters have already signed up, I am looking for other crafters who might be interested in exhibiting. The fee is $25.

I welcome volunteers on the day of the fair to assist with the food and also volunteers who would like to set up an activities booth for club youngters. This could include children’s crafts, face-painting or other children’s activities. This would complement and increase the number of visitors to our fair.

The Garden

A special thank you to Polly Ney, Mimi Mutty and Audrey Feld for their donations of many perennial plants. Dee and I apreciate their gifts and the kind words that so many members have expressed concerning the garden.

Labor Day Activities

While summer fun is in full swing just a quick reminder that a busy Labor Day schedule of activities is planned for this year. If you would like to help, please contact Dee or myself during these glorious days of summer!

Jim Rogers,

Youth Activities Director

House Updates

We were unable to find a house chair and chief steward, but were fortunate to have hired five excellent stewards. Their names are Megan Griffin, Sara Schroeder, Kyle Martin, Josh Mello and Tim Ott. Please welcome and support them. We are creating a list of minor items that need repair that the stewards can accomplish along with their daily tasks.

A list of major projects for member volunteers and outside contractors is also being created. We are getting pricing on redoing the driveway this fall, which will be shared by our neighbors on the north side of us.

We could use adult daytime support during the week when the sail training and swim programs are in progress. If any retired members would like to volunteer one day (2-4 hours) per week, please contact Steve DePaola at 508-679-1256.
