March 2004

Commodore's Message:

I woke today to the predawn. It starts earlier each day. I looked out my window and saw the grey and cold morning emerge overshadowed by an extravagance of colors before the sunrise streaked into the sky. The silence of my snowy yard is broken as the sun scatters the darkness that enveloped it. A new day has begun and its challenges will be met. Spring is around the corner and many plans for our club are under way. Many of you are aware that the Town of Tiverton Planning Board approved our site plan at their review in January 2004. There was much support for Rick Hall and our legal and engineering professionals that evening. Many current members and community leaders were at the meeting. After having the meeting before the Town of Tiverton Planning Board continued for several months, it was gratifying to accomplish the goal we set for ourselves. The site plan review was a requirement of the town building official, before we could proceed with the final design and complete the state permitting process. The site review was approved, but six additional parking spaces that we tried to add to the front of the property were eliminated. The plan has been revised to conform to this change and filed with the town. The design is only for the grounds and general layout of the parking area and location of the building envelope.

I am reminded each day that success is achieved with 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration. Our Building Committee, led by Rick Hall and David Saurette, has continued to prepare and revise the applications, as required for the state agencies. Our next permit, the ISDS permit, which is issued by the state, is to allow us to install a new septic system. The system is a special design to allow parking above it. We have responded to many of the state’s inquiries about the club and this system in the past few weeks. Your board has met a few times as a whole in the past few weeks, and the key members involved in the House Committee and Building Committee have spent each day gathering information and moving these initial phases along. We will then proceed to complete the CRMC application. This will put us in good shape to obtain our building permit. The septic system will be the first item to be installed, to make sure that it is not an obstacle to those parking in the rear of the property and using the pool this summer.

I thank the many members and the well-wishers for their offers of help. I will seek your help when the time arises. For now, we are fine-tuning the plans for the new clubhouse, which have had minor revisions to assure that we conform to the requirements of the Town of Tiverton Zoning By-laws and state fire and handicap requirements. As revisions are made, I know that many of our members will be happy to note that the clubhouse will still retain the same flair that Rick’s design called for and will remind us of the original structure.

Presently, the Sail Training Committee and Swim Program Committee are preparing flyers and schedules for the summer. Interviews for sailing instructors have started. Any member who has a college-age student certified to teach sailing may want to contact a member of the Sail Training Committee, if their child would like an interview for this summer position.

Again, these committee chairpeople are asking for participation by club members to make the programs run smooth and efficiently. Please contact them directly. The House Committee has started to interview for a club manager and stewards. The chairpeople of this committee are designing a landscape to beautify the property this summer. The Race Committee has completed its schedule for this year’s upcoming events. It appears to be exciting. I may have to find a crew and join them again.

Membership and marina renewal mailings have been sent. Even since the clubhouse fire, we have enjoyed a number of new applications, anticipating the continuation of our programs for this year. In fact, we have only been informed by one membership of their request not to renew this year. The support from the membership has been great. Our budgets for the many operations are on target and we expect to continue improvements in the sail training program and the marina.

I do wish to note that although we intend to maintain all of the programs this year and in the future, it is possible that the number of memberships that are available in the future may be reduced, if such a reduction is required to conform to various state regulations. I encourage our members to "stay the course" while we navigate the stormy waters of permit approvals. Therefore, please keep this in mind.

I wish to direct the members to the nice articles published in January 2004 in the Fall River Herald News and in the EastBay newspapers. These unsolicited articles and editorials are appreciated. For now, I am off to pick up my new mainsail cover and look forward to warmer weather to put it on at the dock.

Commodore

BARN DANCE A FABULOUS SUCCESS!

Oh, what a night ! Cool and clear skies on September 27 at Boland’s Tree Farm offered all participants a memorable evening of fun and support for the new era of TYC. Over 375 members, guests, friends, and other yacht club members, as well as the local business community, gathered together in a spirit of "let’s have fun and help a good cause." The responses from that evening have been overwhelmingly positive and complimentary! The display of our plans for the new clubhouse reminded all of the reason behind the merrymaking.

Superior cuisine under the elegantly decorated tent was deliciously prepared and served by Mike Galvin, owner of the Sakonnet Fish Co. Fine drinks were served by Cardoza’s Liquors, featuring Sakonnet Vineyard wines and Buzzard’s Bay beer. Topping off the great meal was the coffee by Coastal Roasters. The most amazing thing was that all were donated to the TYC event by the owners ! A grand THANK YOU is deserved by all.

The DJ provided background music to the hum of lively conversation and later, dance music that rocked the barn. Hayrides and animals - didn’t you just love the piglets - mums and haystacks fulfilled the promise of the Harvest Barn Dance theme.

The Barn Dance Committee members had worked many months to plan this fund-raising extravaganza to make it as successful as possible. Committee members were: Dave Boland, Cynthia Hanssen, Joanne Reuthers, Suzanne Kramers, Ernie Feld, Kerry Denardo-Kovaks, Mary Majkut and chairperson Pat Collins. Others joined the ranks as the evening approached: Russel and Marie LaRoue, Dane Rota, Polly Ney, Ann Berglund, Jim and Dee Rogers, the Items, the Bradys, the Levins..... to name a few. Many community and TYC members who "volunteered" at the event helped contribute toward the success of the evening. Thanking them properly has taken several additional committee meetings to address all with a huge, heartfelt THANKS. The Committee is still in awe of the generosity bestowed upon this TYC benefit.

Silent auction items filled the barn’s sideroom with a collection of fantastic offerings at reasonable prices. The generosity of those contributing items was outstanding. Bidding was fast and continual, with happy customers as the evening bids were closed. Some great items departed with great value for all!

In closing this account, know that the Harvest Barn Dance Committee reached and exceeded its goal of $10, 000 !!!!!! The final reporting will be published through the board of directors. As a committee, we are very satisfied with the financial and social outcome of this event. "It was very, very hard work. The grand, cohesive committee pulled all elements together for a FUN-filled evening that benefited the new TYC building Fund," stated Dave Boland. " It was dramatically wonderful to see old and new friends coming together to have a great time and help the TYC," continued Pat Collins. Thanks to all for their attendance and good friendship.

Respectfully submitted by:

   Leukemia Regatta

The 2004 Leukemia Regatta will be held on August 21, with a pre-race cocktail and lobster dinner on Friday, Aug. 20.

Last year, the TYC won a trophy for the the biggest fund-raising club; we raised over $14,000 for research to conquer this horrible disease.

A few years back, we lost Ron Carr to leukemia. This year, Bristol lost Russ Cardoza, a sailing friend of many of us. Currently, Gary Jobson, who for years has broadcast America’s Cup and other sailing events for ESPN, is fighting lymphoma. Hopefully, TYC will be even more involved this year, both in active racing and in fund-raising.

Included is the Provisional Notice of Race which contains all the information available at this time.
