MARCH 2005

COMMODORE’S

REPORT

Dear Tiverton Yacht Club members,

The last year and a half has been an extremely difficult time for our club and its members. It appears that our resolve in rebuilding our clubhouse is being tested at every turn. It has been quite a challenge, but thanks to the determination and hard work of our volunteer members we are making progress and moving forward.

Although we are still in the middle of winter and the grounds, boats, and pool are frozen, plans are being made for the upcoming season.

1 The TYC has submitted a complete package of House Designs as well as new septic designs to CRMC and we are anxiously awaiting their approval.

2 The Pool Committee is putting the final touches on installing new equipment and working out the details needed to open the pool on time for the 2005 swimming season.

3 The Social Committee is presently planning several events and is looking for your input and participation.

4 The Sail Training Committee is working on new programs and ideas for the 2005 sailing season as well as interviewing for racing coaches, head instructors, and junior instructors.

5 The Race Committee is working on introducing more members to racing by offering new options and opportunities for racers, cruisers, and family members alike.

All of this and more is being done so that this summer season will be an enjoyable one for everyone.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the volunteers who have worked so hard over the last year and a half to help in the rebuilding effort. They have shared their expertise and have volunteered countless hours working to ensure Tiverton Yacht Club’s success.

I would also like to thank the membership in advance for their support for the 2005 season. Without your support the programs and events planned for this coming year would not be possible.

With your help, I am confident that we can accomplish all we have set out to do. In order to succeed, our membership must remain strong and active. Please continue to be a part of the Tiverton Yacht Club’s future.

Thank you,

Peter A. Franklin,

Silent Auction

A silent auction and cocktail party will be held on Friday, April 8, at the Sakonnet Fish Company in Portsmouth. The social event of the spring season will take place from 7 to 9 pm. The $5 price includes a selection of food and a cash bar.

Ernie Feld is the gift chairman. His committee consists of Pat Collins, Lisa McGreavy, Nancy Isherwood and any other members who are interested in donating items for the auction. The list of donated items for the auction will be printed and available to the guests who attend the event.

Eric Baker will handle the public relations for the auction. He will promote the event through press releases to the local media.

Kris Donovan has been appointed the ticket chairperson. Tickets for the event will be available at the Donovan Gallery at Tiverton Four Corners. Tickets may also be purchased by contacting Jim Rogers at (508) 675-0800 or by e-mail E-mail.

The auction will be a very important fund-raiser for our Building Fund.

It will be an evening of fun and enjoyment for all TYC members. Mike Galvin has made his waterfront restaurant available for the party. He will provide food stations and there will be a cash bar.

To date, this committee has raised $25,000 in a series of fund-raisers held since the tragic fire. The largest event was the Barn Dance that raised over $15,000. It is our hope that by the time of this auction we will have more good news concerning the building of our new clubhouse.

If you are willing to help with this important club event, please call me at (508) 675-0800 or E-mail me today!

Thanks for your continuing support of our efforts to rebuild our clubhouse.

Jim Rogers, Chair

Building Fund-raising Committee

Membership Committee

1. We’d like to have a perfect logbook this year. We need your feedback to make it so. Please check your listing.

2. We are still looking for e-mail addresses. Give us your address and we’ll give you the latest news and TYC tidbits by e-mail as they happen, including developments on our new clubhouse (this is the year it’s going up) and other items of interest in 2005.

3. You will be receiving your membership dues statement this month. Membership dues will be the same as last year. If you have any questions about your dues or the dues structure, please contact me, Lew Mutty, @ (401) 624-6425 or E-mail. If you are a senior citizen, 65 years old or older, and have been a member in good standing for the last ten years, you are entitled to a senior citizen dues rate of $200.

4. One half of your membership dues is due immediately. The balance of your membership dues is due by 30 April.

We need your cooperation to facilitate our new building plans, and we need your continued support more than ever this year.

Keep in mind that the initiation fee has been raised to $500 and when the new clubhouse is up and running it will be raised again.

If your membership lapses, you might be required to pay the initiation fee again at the higher rate.

Race Committee

The Race Committee sent a letter to all sailboat owners on January 25 seeking suggestions to increase participation in the Wednesday night racing program. If you do not receive a copy and would like one, please call or e-mail me.

Pool

The pool may be frozen and covered with snow as we speak, but plans are under way to open for business as usual come June! The season will again run from late June through Labor Day. We are in the process of putting together the swim lesson program and will announce details later this spring. Think summer.
