Commodore's Message

The first day of summer is about a month away and many preparations are being completed. The marina dredging, new entrance walkway, dingy dock ladders and new pilings are completed. The new lockers are almost complete as well as additional Sunfish racks for the revised and expanded Thursday night Small Boat Racing Series.

Member communication and participation have improved to make the spring preparation a success. We still need volunteers to create a TYC Web site to expedite information transfer. The Sail Training Program has been improved this year to increase the level of personal attention. We have new co-chairs, boats and instructors. Big Boat Racing Spring Series begins May 15, and the Small Boat Spring Series begins May 23. This small boat racing was held on Friday nights for the last few years and has moved to Thursday nights to be combined with family cookout night to increase involvement. We already have eighteen members signed up for the program. The small boat racing will include Sunfish, Lasers, Optis and old 420s. Open House and Opening Night are May 18. We have many new members this year and this would be an opportune time to meet them. There will be food and entertainment. Let's all attend to see all the accomplishments of the spring and kick off an active summer. All these activities and it's only May! See the TYC 2002 calendar in the newsletter for the upcoming May activities and take part in the fun. Your board of directors is working hard to increase the professionalism of the club and the services it provides. Please work with us to accomplish our goal.

Let the fun begin!

Your Commodore,
Steve DePaola

Sail Training 2002

Applications will not be taken after May 1. If you do not have a registration packet, please contact Kathleen Kerr at 624-1648, e-mail: Leenmach@aol.com or Pete Franklin at 683-0280, e-mail: PeteFranklin@peoplepc.com.

Parents are strongly encouraged to attend the orientation meeting on Friday, June 7, at 6:30 pm in the clubhouse, as new regulations and procedures will be announced. Classes will begin on Monday, June 24, and end on August 16. Award night is scheduled for Thursday, August 15.

Parents interested in purchasing an Opti, 420, Sailfish or other boat for a child enrolled in the program should contact the Portsmouth outlet of the Boat Locker at 683-0400 for details about the annual boat sale on April 14 and 21. Students are encouraged to bring their own boat to class.

All club members are welcome to join the Sail Training Committee for work weekends scheduled for Saturday morning, May 18, June 1, and June 8. We will begin at 9am. Your help is appreciated even if you only have a few hours to spare.

We are continuing our search for a mature head instructor and racing coach. Please contact Stu Hardy at 625-9870 with any leads on possible candidates, or any tips on affordable summer housing for instructors.

Social Calendar

The annual Opening Night and Commissioning will be held on Saturday, May 18, at 6:30 pm. This season we will be returning to some old favorites as well as introducing new ones. I do need individuals or groups to chair specific events. As far as the main events, chairperson responsibilities include organizing a group to setup, cleanup and decorate if necessary. I will do the mailings and purchase supplies.

After meeting with fellow TYC Social Committee members, a decision was made to have member provided dinners at most of the main events. Keep in mind that social events are self-supporting and a minimum charge applies to most events to cover costs.

The 2002 schedule as follows:

Junior Activities

The first junior pool party will be held on Thursday, June 27, at 6:15 pm. Prizes will be awarded for the swimming races as well as the big and little splashes. The party will begin with a basketball contest from the pool and end with the very popular golf games which will be played on the south lawn. Dee and I invite all adults to participate in the weekly pool parties for the children.

New junior events will be planned as long as there are volunteers to help at the event. A few of these events would be a youth dance in July, afternoon parties for the younger children and a talent show in August.

The Garden

For the past three months Dee and I have spent time every Saturday afternoon working in the garden. We were very fortunate that many plants survived the mild winter. The snapdragons were green all winter and the tiny pansies have been in bloom since February!

As we begin this new garden season I would ask any member if they would like to donate a "piece of a perennial" to the TYC garden. Please contact me at 508-673-1118 and we'll be glad to meet you in our garden! I look forward to hearing from you soon!
