COMMODORE’S REPORT

Dear Members,

Welcome to the summer season! The docks are in, the races have begun, and our committee members are preparing for another season of sail training, swim lessons, and social gatherings.

We find ourselves under the tent once again, but we feel we have made progress over the winter months that will bring us closer to our goal of a new clubhouse. The officers, Board of Directors, and committee chairs are all working hard to make our summer season an enjoyable one, while we continue to move forward with our plans for the new clubhouse.

The TYC will officially open its "doors" Friday, June 22, with a commissioning ceremony under the tent. The pool will be open until 8:00 pm that evening, and the social committee is planning a season opening pizza party. I hope you will join us as we kick off our summer. It promises to be an enjoyable evening, and perhaps we will have some good news to share regarding our rebuilding status. I look forward to seeing all of you throughout the summer. May you have a happy and safe summer.

FUND-RAISING

Silent Auction - Over $3,500 was raised at the silent auction held in April at the Sakonnet Fish Company. Mike Galvin, proprietor of the restaurant, provided an assortment of hors d’oeuvres for the event that attracted 75 people. Jim Rogers, who chaired the event, wishes to express his appreciation to Phyllis Ibbotson and Lori Boivin for their hard work to make this event a financial success. Since the loss of the clubhouse in June 2003, a series of fund-raisers has raised over $32,000 for the Building Fund.

During the evening’s festivities the Sail Training Committee conducted a 50/50 raffle. Susan and Eduardo Rodriguez won the raffle and donated the sum, $135, to the Building Fund. Rogers extends the appreciation of the Board to them for their contribution and support of our rebuilding efforts.

A few of the higher bids received and accepted for items were: $340 for a weekend at a townhouse in Boston; $300 for five days in a Maine condo; $200 for a nautical collage by Tova Ibbotson and her classmates; $170 for really nice sunglasses While this was a special fund-raising event, it was also a social which brought TYC members together for an enjoyable evening of fun.

JUNIOR ACTIVITIES

The weekly junior pool parties will begin when the pool opens at the end of June. Swim races, penny dives as well as pool volleyball games will be held during the weekly Thursday family night activities. Jim and Dee Rogers invite all members who have young children to participate in these events. If any members would like to sponsor a junior event such as a dance, cookout or a junior sailboat race, please contact Jim at jimdee@worldnet.att.net today! Together, we can provide an exciting and enjoyable summer for all junior members!

GARDEN

For the past month every Saturday afternoon my wife and I have been clearing the winter brush from the garden and behind the fence. If any member would like to donate a piece of one of their perennials to the garden, please contact me. A special thanks to Mimi Mutty for all her perennial plant donations from her garden and her continuing support for and work on our TYC garden!

POOL REPORT

Opening day for the pool will be Friday, June 22, at noon. We will be open until 8:00 pm that night as we host the pizza challenge and club commissioning. We have a lot to do before then, including setting up pool equipment, the shower trailer and general site clean-up.

If you can help with some raking and sweeping, we could use your help! I have tentatively planned the clean-up for Saturday, May 26, from noon until 3:00 pm. If you can help, please send me an e-mail at wkarzenski@cox.net

SAIL TRAINING REPORT

Summer is almost here! Plans are well under way for the 2007 sail training season. The "early" registration deadline was March 30, and we have a number of new students this year! Our Beginner class is nearly full, so don’t delay any longer if you have been thinking about signing up a new beginner. Remember, there is a MANDATORY parent orientation meeting on Thursday, June 14, at 7:00 pm under the tent. The balances of all class fees are due at this time.

We are pleased to announce the head instructor for this year is Gardiner Bowen from Roger Williams University. Gardiner comes to us with a lot of racing experience as well as having been with the program on Martha’s Vineyard for several years. We would also like to welcome Katie Hilton as our newest instructor. Rick Lyman and Bronwen McAuliffe will be our returning instructors this year.

Save the Date! June 3 will be our second annual opening breakfast! This was a very successful fund-raiser for us last year, and we hope to have an even better turnout this year! The Sail Training Committee is asking for donations of gift baskets (any theme, any type, large or small!) for our raffle. Please call Kelly Marks (401-625-1358).

The breakfast will be held at St. Christopher Church following morning mass, from 10:30-12:30.

There is still a bit of work to do to be ready for the season. We have a work day scheduled for Saturday, May 5. Any and all help is appreciated to help get our fleet in order and ready for our sailors. Hope to see you there!

Thank you!

The Sail Training Committee
