COMMODORE’S REPORT
In the past several years, as the boating season comes to a close, I have come to dread the long cold months between our club’s last social event and the spring commissioning ceremony.
BUT, NOT THIS YEAR!
Tiverton Yacht Club’s Board of Directors and the Social Committee have a full calendar of exciting events. Many of these functions will be held at area yacht clubs and local restaurants! I know that this will be a great opportunity to keep up-to-date on the ever-changing building process, while sharing a laugh with some fellow members.
At our annual meeting this October, I will have the honor and pleasure of being accompanied by our new Vice Commodore, Lanny Goff, and our new Rear Commodore, Cheryl Padilla. Both Lanny and Cheryl have been members of the Board of Directors and committee chairs for quite some time. Their hard work and commitment to the Tiverton Yacht Club have been an inspiration.
In an effort to keep members informed as well as entertained, Cheryl Padilla will be coordinating the busiest off-season social calendar in many years. This will give members the opportunity to participate in events and voice their concerns on a monthly basis.
In anticipation of having to manage the new clubhouse, all committees are writing an Operating Guide. This guide will assist them in the day-to-day and year-to-year tasks that need to be performed. Lanny Goff has volunteered to coordinate this task. This is a project that I believe will be a tremendous help to the club for years to come.
On September 7th I received a letter from three children who stated that they "miss the TYC." So they got together and sold lemonade and flower arrangements, and washed cars. Their efforts and the efforts of their friends raised $61.87 for the Tiverton Yacht Club’s Rebuilding Fund. I would like to personally thank Coral Rodriguez, Kate Karzenski, Alex Corr, and friends not only for raising $61.87, but for raising everyone’s spirits. Great job!
There are many members who are helping to rebuild the club that we all miss. Everyone can help! If you can spare just a few moments a week to volunteer your services to a committee of your liking, I know that you will find it a rewarding and enjoyable experience.
These are exciting times for the Tiverton Yacht Club. Please be a part of it, and attend as many of this winter’s social events as your calendar will allow!
Thank you!
Peter A. Franklin,
Commodore
SAIL TRAINING
The 2004 TYC Sail Training season was another in a long line of great summers: lots of quality sailing time, excellent results for our racing teams, and much fun amongst friends.
Sail Training took advantage of our leased property to the north, installing storage and dockage / launch facilities so that the entire program operated on the west side of Riverside Drive. This eliminated the hazard of hundreds of road crossings, and made for a more efficient use of everyone’s time. Admittedly, the gravel and dirt parking lot is not exactly a sailing paradise, but the instructors and the kids made it work, and the summer went off without a hitch.
Our intent for next summer is to focus our efforts and resources on the Optimist and 420 classes. We need to acquire more Optis in order to handle our anticipated class loadings for next year. It would be better and simpler if those parents who can see their way through to purchasing an Opti for their child to use next summer would do so; there will be an eager purchaser of the boat when your child is through using it! By having the Optis individually owned, and passed down within the program to new users, our program gains capacity without the issues inherent in having the club own ever more boats. Start looking now for an Opti for your young Ellen MacArthur or Russell Coutts!
The Sail Training Committee invites you to participate in this year’s scintillating schedule of planning meetings. We usually meet the third Tuesday of each month, and hopefully Mike Galvin will continue to generously allow us to gather upstairs at the Sakonnet Fish Co., but give a call to co-chairs Rick Lyman or Bruce Epke to confirm.
Comments and suggestions are always welcome; they’re much more helpful if you deliver them in person at a meeting, and then agree to help solve the problem!
Membership
We are looking for a new member volunteer to serve on the membership committee. We would also like to hear from any or all of our members about their personal concerns and suggestions for the upcoming 2005 season.
A reminder: We have deadlines for the payment of club dues and fees. These dates are necessary in order to publish our logbook on time with a correct listing of our active memberships.
These are difficult times for our club. We need the support of every membership.
One way you can help is by complying with our payment schedules. Another way is by attending our membership and other special information meetings. You are also invited to attend our Board of Directors meetings on the second Tuesday of each month. They will likely be held at the Li’l Bear Lounge from 6:30 until 8:30 pm.
There are 184 memberships. Eleven of these are on leave of absence. The active membership total is 173.
There are several 2004 memberships not listed or not listed correctly in the 2004 logbook and need to be changed for the 2005 logbook. Please see the hard copy of the newsletter for details.
Participation Assessment
There has been some confusion in this matter, so let us trim the sails and try to get back on course.
In order to qualify for credit, a casual attendance at a club event will NOT do it. A 6-8 hour task or a combination of tasks that add up to 6-8 hours of service WILL. Furthermore, the service must be signed for by one of the committee chairs. We must tighten these rules to make it fair to all members.

Club Secretary
House Committee
The tent is down for the season, but all utilities are on, the portable toilets are in place and a steward (Debbie Johansen) is scheduled on weekends through Columbus Day (October 11).
A new roof and some carpentry have been applied to the garage, thanks to Steve DePaola. A security system will protect the grounds and marina this winter, thanks to Dave Saurette.
The House Committee co-chairs (Polly Ney and Stu Hardy) continue to look for volunteers to help with house tasks. We anticipate a busy fall and winter as the new septic system is installed and house construction begins. Please give either one of us a call if you can help.
Racing News
Another successful season was capped with the awards banquet held on October 17 at the Sakonnet Fish Co. Although our numbers are not large, the competition is serious and the awards are well deserved.
In class A, Dave Saurette sailing Seraphim won first place for the summer series. Class B was captured by Greg Morash sailing Mariah. Special recognition must go to Polly Ney for her help running the races.
Junior Activities
Beach games and putter golf entertained the many juniors who came to the Thursday night potluck suppers at the club. Although activities were limited, most of the youngsters enjoyed playing the games that were organized by my wife and myself. The broad smiles on their faces when they won prizes for competition reflected the joy of the weekly events.
Our appreciation to Cheryl Padilla who donated an array of beach games for the youngsters. The games included several ball games, horseshoes, and a sand dart game. These were used mostly on the beach after the youngsters participated in golf and basketball games on the club side of the road.
The tradition of the Labor Day party continued this year. My wife and I had beach games for a few children in the afternoon and many club members came to share a potluck supper under the tent before the early sunset. Special thanks to Wayne Karzenski for arranging the evening portion of the day.
During the winter months I welcome the opportunity to hear from the members about additional junior activities for the next year. We will be reestablishing our weekly junior pool parties as well as having afternoon pool parties for the younger set. If you wish to volunteer your time to chair an event, please contact me at 508-673-1118 or by e-mail at jimdee@worldnet.att.net
I do hope to have two junior dances, an art show (members’ work), a country fair, and whatever other new events that you wish.

Fund-raising
During the past year the committee has raised $25,000 for the building fund. Additional fund-raising ventures will be held at the scheduled winter socials. The next large effort in this regard will be a silent auction/cocktail party which will be held in early spring. I am currently forming a committee for this. If you wish to assist, please contact me at 508-673-1118 or e-mail jimdee@worldnet.att.net and I will be happy to discuss this plan with you. I know that it will be a great event not only to raise needed money, but to bring all the members together for an evening of fun.

Social
This summer found us socializing under the tent with beautiful sunsets and festive lights. Thursday potlucks were well attended, and the children were entertained with land games (in lieu of pool games). The children also mastered the fine art of beach combing on our own TYC beach.
This fall and into the winter we plan on hosting various social functions to keep the membership involved and informed of our progress. Late September we had a cocktail party at the Ida Lewis Yacht Club in Newport. Other yacht clubs have also generously offered us the use of their facilities for other social functions in the upcoming months.
Information on upcoming events will be mailed at a later date. However, we would like to speed up correspondence by also using e-mail . If the TYC does not have your e-mail address, could you please send Eric Baker at webmaster@tivertonyachtclub.org
Thank you in advance.
If anyone is interested in getting involved with the social activities of the club, please call Cheryl Padilla e-mail rakrisdav@aol.com.
