Sail Training Video
There is very nice video, (produced by ST instructor, Dylan) on the club Web site. It is accompanied by music and has many shots of the classes in action.
Note: This is a very large file, which may not be able to be viewed on older, slower computers.

TYC members:
A hard copy will be mailed to you shortly but for
future issues, we would prefer to "SAVE THE TREES".
Please e-mail Lew and let him know if you are content to receive only an e-mail version of THE FAIR WINDS and other announcements. It would save us time and money also.
Thanks, The Management

COMMODORE’S REPORT
Dear Members,
It seems like only yesterday that we gathered under the tent to kick off the summer season. The season is almost at a close, but it was a successful one. The pool was open and members were able to participate in swim lessons as well as general open swim. Wayne Karzenski and the many members of the Pool Committee put in countless hours in the spring to ensure the pool opened on time and then throughout the entire summer to keep the water at its highest quality and at the perfect temperature. Those behind-the-scenes efforts kept everything running smoothly.
The Sail Training program had another good season. The program was at capacity and did a remarkable job running off our own beach. Our Sail Training chairman, Chip Reuther, organized a two-day regatta with the Cuttyhunk Yacht Club in Cuttyhunk this past July. The children had a great time and had some great sailing in new waters. I spoke with members of the Cuttyhunk Yacht Club after the event and they were impressed with our youth sailing program and especially the sportsmanship of our young sailors. They hope to make it an annual event. The Wednesday Night Racing Series has had another successful season with a growing fleet and more competition. The series has ended for the season as the sun sets earlier each day and it is hard to determine those close finishes after dark. If you are interested in joining the fleet next year, or would like to crew for an existing boat or just help out with the Race Committee, please contact Lanny Goff.
Our Social Committee has again done a wonderful job bringing us together on Thursday nights. Each week, as the themes change, we are able to sample the culinary talents of our members. The adult cocktail parties, although much quieter, were also enjoyed by many of our members. Jim Rogers continues to entertain our youngsters during those Thursday night potlucks. From penny dives to the biggest splash, to sinking putts, their competitive spirit shines through. The Marina Committee kept things running smoothly this summer. Mike Hiener took over as Marina chairman and, in conjunction with his Marina Committee members, has made some minor improvements on the pier and docks. More maintenance will be scheduled to keep the marina in good working order.
Our membership remains strong. The combined effort of all the committees and their members keeps us going and keeps our programs thriving. Without all the effort of our members our situation would be dire, but because of all of you we will continue to thrive in the future. We are expecting to have our building permit in September after a hearing in front of the Tiverton Zoning Board of Review where we have applied for a variance for our septic system. The new building plans are complete and all of the preliminary work has been done so that we can act quickly when we are issued our building permit. Our neighbors may still appeal these decisions, but the judge ruled we had a right to rebuild so we believe our goal is in sight. Once we begin our construction we will be actively recruiting new members through a membership drive. We would like to reach our capacity of 200 memberships and start a waiting list.
As I have spent the last two years fighting for the TYC in the courts, zoning boards, CRMC hearings, and countless other hearings, I have been forced to look back through the history of this yacht club. I learned more than the laws and regulations involved with the yacht club. I learned about all the people who came before: their struggles, their triumphs, and especially their memories. The Tiverton Yacht Club was a great place to be, and a great place to grow up. It still is! With our efforts and your support, it will continue to be in the future.
Thank you for your continued support.

MARINA REPORT
A second work party was held on Saturday, July 12. The dock was repaired where the carts are stored, and the steps to the beach were removed. The dock on the beach was taken apart, and some of the wood will be used at a later time. I will store the decking under the lockers. The remaining wood will be piled by the lockers and should be cut up and placed in the dumpster. This can be done by anyone, and if you can help with this effort, please send me an e-mail. Chafing boards were added to some of the worn pilings, decks were screwed down on all of the floating docks, some of the railing tops were painted, and the beach was raked. Everyone’s effort was greatly appreciated. The beach and docks are looking really wonderful. I need a volunteer to dig around the mushroom anchor on the beach, pull it out with a car or truck, and tip it on its side so nobody gets hurt on it. A third work party will be held later in the season to rebuild the steps and do general cleanup, ongoing repairs, and painting.
Thanks for everyone’s help.
Mike
SOCIAL (dated)
Thursday potluck dinners have been a great success! Members are once again demonstrating their culinary skills with fabulous food, and what a selection! Many thanks to the Social Committee for making the tent festive each week and to all the members who help set up and clean up. Your behind-the-scenes efforts make our Thursday nights a blast.
Don’t miss the first TYC chili/chowder cook-off on Thursday, August 7, under the tent. Join us at 6:00 pm (judging of entries at 7:00 pm). Choose a category to show off your famous recipe: meat chili, vegetarian chili, corn chowder, or clam chowder. Don’t want to enter? No problem! Please bring one of the following to make our night a success: salad with dressing, corn bread, French bread, oyster crackers, or a dessert.
Prizes will be awarded for the best of category. Please contact Lori Boivin at buckley3@cox.net no later that Tuesday, August 5, to let me know what you are bringing. Remember we have limited ability to keep your entry warm, so crock pots would be great. All chili and chowder entries must be homemade!!
As always, any member that would like to join the Social Committee is more than welcome. We can always use an extra pair of hands and some new ideas.
See you Thursday night!

MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE
By the time you receive this newsletter, you should have received your membership cards. We have issued one membership card to each membership. You may also have received a 2008 TYC logbook personally from Jimmy Rogers. He passed them out at the Thursday night chili/chowder potluck supper. If you have received your copy, please review your listing and any others and advise us of any errors and needed corrections. For example, Lew and Mimi Mutty are listed with an old e-mail address. It has been changed to: lewmutty@verizon.net. If you haven’t received your copy of the TYC logbook, we apologize. It will be mailed to you in the very near future.
We have still not received annual dues from some of our presumed memberships and must assume that these members have decided to drop out. Our bylaws require that members wishing to resign or requesting a leave of absence (LOA) must apply for that status in writing.
Our overall membership has dropped slightly this year, so we have plenty of room for new memberships. Please note that new memberships admitted to the club after August 1 pay only half of the annual dues.
Please help us welcome our newest 2008 members:

JUNIOR ACTIVITIES
More youngsters than ever are participating in the Thursday night pool parties for the juniors. Prizes are awarded to the winners of the swim races, the penny dive, the big and little splashes, and the pool basketball contest that begins the activities. A new game, the water balloon throw, is being chaired by Phyllis Ibbotson, who brings the youngsters onto the green grassy rug in back of the club. Phyllis and my wife, Dee, coordinate the throwing of the balloons until they break. After a lollipop contest chaired by Dee, the youngsters try their golfing skills on two putting mats set up on our front lawn.
The success of this year’s activities is a positive sign as the rebuilding process continues. I thank all the parents who have helped both Dee and myself organize these parties on a weekly basis.
THE GARDEN
Dee and I wish to thank the members who helped us with the garden this year either by their donation of plants or by their kind words concerning our efforts. In May we planted over 50 perennials and 150 annuals in the garden. This is in addition to the hundreds of marigold seeds that we strewed into the soil. These marigolds are from a friend who raises prize marigolds. These bloom late into the season and will provide color to the garden through October. Please feel free to take some of these seeds after the flowers die in the fall. Your garden will be brighter next year!
POOL UPDATE
Another great season of swimming at the TYC is coming to an end. Overall the weather was beautiful with sunny skies and pool water temperatures near 80 degrees without the need for our heater! It was nice to see the pool used by so many children and families. Swim lessons went well again this year, although it was unfortunate that community children could not participate because of the legal proceedings. We adjusted our hours of operation to compensate for fewer swim lessons and they appear to be well received. If you have any comments regarding hours or anything pool related, please let me know. Our last day of operation will be Labor Day, September 1. We hope everyone enjoyed this season and hope to see everyone next summer!
SAIL TRAINING
The Tiverton Yacht Club Sail Training program had a very successful and enjoyable season! All sailors and instructors should be commended for their hard work this summer. Our instructors, Chris Simeone, Max Kramers, Bronwen McAuliffe, Kate Hilton, and Dylan Rodriguez, have all built a rapport with our kids on the water that will last a lifetime. A special thanks to our instructors for an enjoyable summer and for their caring attitude when interacting with our children. Here are a few photos of the kids. Be sure to see the video on the Sail Training page of the Web site.
Our 420 racers were invited to participate in a friendly competitive regatta on Cuttyhunk Island during July. By all accounts, our sailors were evenly matched, sailing club 420s and Lasers. We are very appreciative to the Cuttyhunk Yacht Club and islanders for their hospitality toward our sailors and club. Several NBYA (Narragansett Bay Yachting Association) regattas were attended by our racers. Some top ten placements were made by our Optimist racers, of whom we are very proud. Keep the spirit!
Another great success was the TYC Sail Training awards night. Junior sailors were all recognized for their accomplishments and improvements. A great time was had by all. Thanks again to all of the TYC Sail Training Committee members for their dedication and hard work. As the evenings get shorter and we begin shutting windows at night, we feel the seasons changing. This, of course, means it’s time for our fall work parties; moving the 420 hulls to an off-site location is the main priority, along with other Sail Training beach, locker, and garage organization. Any and all volunteers are welcome to assist.
Thanks again to all who took part in the Tiverton Yacht Club Sail Training program for the 2008 season! We look forward to seeing you again next season.
Best regards,
Chip Reuther, Chair
Tiverton Yacht Club Sail Training Committee
