Important Documents for the 2011 Season:

Dear TYC Member:

To assure the highest quality, “hands-on” instruction for all participants in the Junior Sailing Program, the Sail Training Committee has agreed to limit the number of students to 80. If you wish to enroll your child in the program, it is important that you submit the application form and deposit by March 30, 2011. After this date, applications for each class will be accepted strictly on a “first come, first serve” basis until the class size limit has been reached. Some classes may reach their limit before April 30. In this event, students who were enrolled last season will be given preference. No application will be considered if TYC family dues for 2011 have not been paid by March 1, as required under TYC bylaws.

For 2011 our goal is to continue to improve our youth sailing instruction program, while continuing to emphasize the essentials of safety, skill development, enjoyment of sailing, and care for boats and equipment. We also believe that parent participation in various aspects of the sail training program is essential. Parents will be expected to participate in boat transportation if their child is attending a regatta.

Junior Sailing Classes will begin Monday, June 27, 2011 and end Friday, August 19, 2011. NBYA Jr. Race week will be Aug. 11 through the 13th hosted by Conanicut Yacht Club at Ft Getty Recreational Area (Jamestown , RI). There are several NBYA regattas planned for this summer. We will have a schedule of the regattas the TYC racing team will attend, and those that the TYC sail training program will support at Parent Orientation Night and on the TYC sail training website. If you attended Race Week last year, you should receive a packet of information from NBYA in the near future.

We anticipate that students will miss class on occasion due to vacations and other commitments; however, we do not believe this will seriously affect the student’s enjoyment and parent’s appreciation of what our Sail Training program has to offer.

Please review the program descriptions and download your PDF file of the registration form to send in, along with your deposit, ASAP to reserve a spot in the program.

There will be a MANDATORY Parent’s Orientation Meeting on Thursday, June 16 th, 2011 at 6:30p.m. at the TYC club (under the tent). The balance of class fees is due at this time. Please ensure you attend this important meeting. It will help the Sail Training committee enormously if everyone attends and all our “housekeeping” is tended to.

Program Descriptions:

Tiller Tamer: AGES 5 to 7
This is a half day, two day a week program that introduces younger students to sailing.

BEGINNER CLASS: AGES 8 to 11
The emphasis in this two-day per week program is the introduction to sailing and to help the participant become comfortable in a small boat. Skills that will be emphasized include: (1)safety on the water-including the use of life jackets-what to do if your boat capsizes of if someone falls overboard and how to recognize a dangerous situation; and (2)boating skills- terminology, handling and maneuvering skills, rigging and de-rigging a boat, as well as basic boat care and maintenance. These skills are taught both on and off the water using a variety of fun activities. At the end of the program, each sailor should be able to steer a boat around the harbor on his or her own. The groundwork in this program is important to building a high level of confidence in the beginning sailor.

INTERMEDIATE CLASSES I and II: AGES 10-13

INTERMEDIATE I:
This two-day per week program stresses more advanced boat handling skills, weather observation, safety skill, reinforcement of the rules of the road and basic racing rules. Time will be spent introducing racing skills and sportsmanship. At the end of this program, a sailor should have the skills necessary to be comfortable and confident on the water on their own.

INTERMEDIATE II (OPTI RACING):
This is a three-day per week course, with a goal towards improving the racing skills, which have been acquired. This course will help those who have the desire to venture out on the racecourse, with an emphasis on Opti racing.

420 RACING CLASS: AGES 12 to 18
This is a three-day per week course whose focus is to develop the competent sailor into a competitive racer. Comprehension and application of the rules will be studied, as well as tactics and boat handling. Students will be part of the TYC’s racing team and compete against other teams.

TEEN SAILING CLASS: AGES 12 to 18
This is a three day per week class that will focus on the recreational aspects of sailing.

ALL CLASSES WILL BEGIN AT 9:00a.m. AND END AT 4:00p.m.. WE ASK FOR YOUR UTMOST COOPERATION IN ADHERING TO THIS TIME SCHEDULE.
