Summer is almost here! Plans are well underway for the 2007 sail training season. The “early” registration deadline was March 30, and we have a number of new students this year! Our “Beginner” class is nearly full- so don’t delay any longer if you have been thinking about signing up a new beginner. Remember- there is a MANDATORY Parent Orientation meeting on Thurs. June 14 at 7:00 p.m. “under the tent”. The balances of all class fees are due at this time. We are pleased to announce the Head Instructor for this year- Gardiner Bowen from Roger Williams University. Gardiner comes to us with a lot of racing experience as well as having been with the program on Martha’s Vineyard for several years. We would also like to welcome Katie Hilton as our newest instructor. Rick Lyman and Bronwen McAuliffe will be our returning instructors this year. Save the Date!! June 3 rd will be our second annual Opening Breakfast! This was a very successful fundraiser for us last year, and we hope to have an even better turn out this year! The sail training committee is asking for donations of gift baskets (any theme, any type, large or small!) for our raffle. Please call Kelly Marks (625-1358). The breakfast will be held at St. Christopher’s Church following morning mass from 10:30-12:30. There is still a bit of work to do to be ready for the season. We have a work day scheduled for Sat. May 5. Any and all help is appreciated to help get our fleet in order and ready for our sailors. Hope to see you there! Thank you! The Sail Training Committee
FEB 2007 To all TYC members, the 2007 year seems to be off to a fast start with many positive changes coming to TYC. As you all have heard, the yacht club has received a building permit from the Town of Tiverton. This has put the board and building crew into high gear. Our sail-training program is also moving forward. The Board has approved the purchase of 4 – New Opti’s to our fleet for this summer. Also, there will be another new set of 420 sails. These will be great additions to the fleet as we continue to update our equipment. Some other important changes are coming to the program coming this summer.
I would also like to thank the members of the sail training committee for all their help with keeping this program so strong. But, we can always use more hands. Please keep eye out for the work parties that will come this spring. We need skilled people to help with boat repair and maintenance. We look forward to having many new sailors in the Beginners and Intermediate I fleet this year. If your child is 8 and older, they can have a wonderful summer of sailing at TYC. So, come down the hill from the pool and join our kids on the water. Looking forward to fair winds and a warm summer. Rick Lyman, sail training.
Let's get together to see Jonathan Horvath Jonathan Horvath, one of our great instructors from 2006, is one of the lead actors in a production of Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew. The show will run Wed., April 11 through Sun., April 15 with shows at 8:00p.m. Wed-Sat and matinees at 2:00p.m. Sat and Sun. Tickets are $5.00 and the show is at the Pell Chafee Performance Center on Empire St. We would like to get a group of sail training kids (and any parents interested as well!) to go see Jonathan. Please email Melinda McAuliffe MINKY373@aol.com if you are interested in attending and which show you would prefer (Fri night, Sat matinee, Sat night, etc.). Majority will rule, and we will reserve a group of tickets. Please respond by March 15 if you are interested!
The summer sailing program is underway! The 420 Advanced Racing class had their first regatta on July 5 and team racing has also begun. The NBYA regatta schedule is noted on the calender and the regatta schedule link Please check the NBYA website for regatta information, including registration and permission forms. Parents are responsible for transporting all racers and their boats. In our ongoing efforts to improve communication, we are developing a e-mail list for sail training. We will be sending out a test message soon. Please let us know if you do not receive a message by the end of the month. Save the date: Friday, August 18th at 6:00p.m. under the tent. $10/family before 8/12 and $12/family at the door. We will supply the hotdogs and hamburgers, as well as paper goods. Thanks,
MAY 2006 The first annual Tiverton Yacht Club Sail Training May breakfast was held on May 7 at St. Christopher’s Church. Thanks to all who attended and helped make this a very successful fundraiser for us! We raised enough to buy two sets of sails! A very special thank you to the Tiverton area businesses that supported us with their very generous donations:
Thanks to all that donated items for our raffle baskets and brought baked goods as well. And of course, a great, big thank you to St. Christopher’s church for allowing us to use their facilities. Reminder: The MANDATORY Parent Orientation meeting will be held Thursday, June 15 th at 7:00p.m. under the tent. A parent/student handbook will be given out at this time. The remaining balances of class fees are due at this time. For those students attending sail training for the first time, you will be required to purchase the text Start Sailing Right for $15.00. These will be available for purchase at the meeting. The Sail Training Committee is hard at work preparing for this season. We will be having work week-ends on June 10 and 17 at the TYC site. Any and all help is appreciated. Thanks,
MARCH 2006
FEBRUARY 2006 The sail training committee is hard at work preparing for the 2006 season. There are a few IMPORTANT changes taking place:
We look forward to hearing from you. Please take a moment to send us that email about your summer plans and download your registration packet and send it in, as well! Thank you! Sail Training Committee
The Sail Training Summer 2005 season ended with awards night on August the 19th. Please watch for a picture page that will be posted on the sail training Web site with pictures from awards night, race week, and a few other events. Check out the NBYA Web site link for the season's final standings. TYC was well represented. There are loads of pictures from Matthew Cohen photography from Race Week: www.COHENPHOTOGRAPHY.com. If you submitted your "Little Red Book" at the start of sail training, you should have received it back at awards night. We will continue with the "Start Sailing Right" curriculum from U.S. Sailing, so remember to save your books for next year. When you complete your book, you can turn it in to U.S. Sailing for a certificate of completion. We had three students that completed their books this summer: Lucy Lyman, Peter Wright, and Amy Larson. Well done! We have decided to sell ALL the remaining Capri boats. Please contact Rick Lyman for availability and pricing. There are some great deals! Sail Training will be having a work weekend on Sept 24th and 25th to tend to winter storage of our fleet. Any and all help is greatly appreciated. Finally, the Sail Training Committee is already working and planning for a successful 2006 program. Keep checking the sail training Web site for new information. Keep an eye out for the 2006 registration packet that will be available as a PDF file to download and send in. We are asking for all applications to be sent in by March 30, 2006. Note that this is earlier than in the past, but we feel it is crucial to the planning of the program. Thank you, Sail Training
